NO sound after XP reinstall

So i built my own laptop and got everything up and running but there is no sound. HPzv500/p4...Device manager shows everything is well sound/video related...

audio codecs
legacy audio drivers
legacy video capture device
media control devices
soundMAX integrated digital audio
video codecs

everything here has the little volume/speaker icon showing. Itunes even shows songs as playing, but no sound. So it seems all is well except no sound from speakers / headphones. All the typical dumb things ive checked, volume is up, not muted etc. is there a driver or device conflict or what? here is my EVEREST summary, any help greatly appreciated as I am stuck...Ive read quite a few things regarding AC'97 / soundMAX integrated / laptop sound issues...to no avail so far

Check these out

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot

Hope this helps

Hi Barbara
I 100% respect that you are the master of the tech answers!!! But windows audio is on automatic for sure! and ive reinstalled my soundMAX integrated drivers again, everything in device manager is good to go (no stupid ! or anything)...DVDs, Itunes etc all play and act as though sound should work, BUT no sound via laptop speakers, headphones, external speakers, or output to TV...I am totally at a loss!!!

I appreciate any time you devote to helping me
Mike
