A. Disable the old NIC card.
B. Create a new Local Area Connection and specify which card to use.

START
SETTINGS
NETWORK CONNECTIONS
LOCAL AREA CONNECTION
PROPERTIES
Change the CONNECT USING TAB TO THE NIC CARD YOU WANNA USE.

I have the same problem

Have you found a solution yet - I've been racking my brains over it for a while now.

Why do you need to plug into 2 different networks. Does plugging into your work lan not also connect you into the internet?

What you are trying to do seems to me like Windows Connection sharing which allows you to have 2 network cards and do exactly as you described. The only thing is... you shouldn't need to be doing this unless you are setting the computer up as a DHCP server so that your other office lan computers can connect to the internet through your computer.

Is that what you are doing?

Not exactly

I have 2 computers - I can only connect to the internet over the wireless connection (the modem is too far away for cabling). I have wireless on both and could transfer files over the wireless connection but it's very slow. I just want to be able to choose wired nic for file transfer and wireless for internet. Thanks for replying

how do you have your 2 computers connected? Through a hub perhpas?

Well I've never actually done this the way you described. But I have a pretty good guess what to do. What have you tried?

Windows has a control panel called "Network Connections" which allows you to manage all your connections.

What you would do... is having 2 cards, in this control panel you'd have listed something like Local Area Connection and Local Area Connection 2. I actually just took out my 2nd network card yesterday so I can't tell you for sure what it says.

Step one which i think, you already have done is to create an internet connection to your wireless and select the wireless card local area connection for that. Afterwards get properties on the connection you just made and go the the "Networking" tab. Under "This connection uses the following items:" Make sure "Internet Protocol" and "QoS Packet Schedular" are the only things that are checked. I don't really know what "Qos" does but it's running on my first connection.

next.. instead of getting properties on the connection you made previously, get properties on the 2nd network card local area connection 2. and under the same "networking" table check "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" and "Client for Microsoft Networks."

Check the first Local area connection and make sure those settings aren't selected.

That should allow you to do what you want to do because it basically mimics the Microsoft connection sharing setup, minus the internet sharing part.

heh..

Hey - that sounds about right. I'll give it a go when I get a chance. I have the 2 computers connecting wirelessly to a router (with DHCP) which then connects straight to a modem. I just have a xover cable between the computers for file transfer each with a static address.

I'll try disabling the IP and Qos options for the cabled network card and vice versa on the wireless cards. Someone mentioned activating the network bridge facility that windows xp has but I tried it and everything fell apart so I thought I'd leave it until I'd tried everything else I could think of.

Thanks in advance

Richard

It Worked

Donut..... Thank you for figuring this out. I have an internal Point of Sale program that we use for our facility and I now need to have an external connection for our newly aquired birthday party booking website. I was having to disable the POS adabter to see the external site and back and forth which was a pain. I saw your post reply and I removed the check marks on "Client for Microsoft Networks", and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks". This fixed my issue.....good job and thank you very much!!!!
