XP problem that cannot be solved.

I have a problem that cannot be resolved. I have posted in other forums and do not have any answers.

I have Windows XP Pro, AMD Athlon 1700 + with a Volcano 7 cooler, and MSI KT7 Turbo 2 Motherboard (133 FSB). Three sticks of 125Mb ram, MSI Gforce 3ti 128Mb videocard, NIC, 56K modem, Audigy sound card, 2 Maxtor 40 gig hard drives, Matsushista DVD Drive, Lite on CDRW, and USb peripherals.

Especially while playing games the PC will freeze, cauing me to have to reset the PC. It happens randomly, and will happen when I quicksave in certain games. I also get blue scren errors stating page fault in non paged area. I have tested the memory with simmtester and all is good, I just bought a 500 watt PSU to replace my 300 and the specs are more than needed, and it still happens. I have reformatted, changed cards in PCI slots, dusted, everything possible. Most recently when running Norton antivirus, it will blue screen in the middle of the scan. Soemtimes when I open a window, the same or during downloads.

This is getting annoying, does anyone have any info? or need more on my system?

Oh yea I have updated detonators and Bios to latest release as well.

Hi Hank3rd, It might be your sound card. As somebody else suggested on another forum I did a Google search for "XP audigy freeze" and it came back with 878 hits. All of them telling of the same problems your going through. I don't have the time right now to look through them for you but if it is the sound card and you get it sorted could you post back.

Good luck and happy computing

Steve

Audigy and legacy sound cards cause ALOT of blue screens. Make sure you have the appropriate drivers installed. for troubleshooting purposes try disabling the sound card in device manager and see if that helps. You also may want to turn down your hardware acceleration. With you computers specs though, and after a format, you shouldnt be having any trouble. Norton AV sucks, and uses a lot of computer resources, its possible it could be the cause. Try disabling it as well for troubleshooting purposes. Also look for any device conflicts or IRQ conflicts in your System Information screen. Type DXDIAG under start run to see if you have any sound or video driver conflicts. Make sure any integrated parts you have in your computer are disabled if you dont use them. IE: video, sound, and NIC cards. Even though you may not have them selected as the ones you are using, they are still sharing frequencys with other devices.

Ok. Last night I did a lot of trouble shooting. I thought I had an Audigy sound card, but it is an Xwave, a cheapy. I yanked that. My problems in gaming seemed to disappear, so I think, but I have nor checked it out for a long period of time. Te PC did not freeze in the game.

When I run Norton Antivirus or Spybot to look for spyware the PC freezes during the scan. I tried to boot up in safe mode and it would not go past MUP.SYS.

Does anyone have any further knowledge?

Lot of good info on this thread.

You said you had 3 sticks of 125 RAM, I'm assuming you mean 128?

I would pull all but one of the sticks (128 if plenty to run XP for a few tests) and try running Norton. I've seen manyh instances where page faults and COMPLETE hangups (cannot ctl+alt+del out) are caused by either bad memory, or memory not being compatible. Even if the mem program checks the memory out fine, they might still be bad.

I had a similar problem where I couldn't render anything in Poser 4.0, and 3D gamed would freeze. I took the CPU back, they tested it with some CPU burn-in program and said it was fine. I made them try a replacement CPU and that fixed the problem. So try switching out the memory.

Hi hank3rd, I bet you already know about and have tried live driver2 and the other tools from MSIhttp://www.msicomputer.com/support/msi_support.asp
. Somebody else resolved the same mup.sys error by removing their USB2.0 card http://<a href="http://www.earthv.co...p?TipID=63</a>

good luck and happy computing

Everything is updated.....

This is really starting to bother me now. After trying almost everything under the sun….I had my rig up and running with a new PSU, soundcard, tested memory…you name it. I was still having problems after this with random reboots and freezing. I then thought that it might be software or driver related, so I used an older image from Powerquest Drive Image. It ran great for a few hours and I played games and no freezing!!!!!!

Tonight I came home and went on the internet for 5 minutes and I started to update my Norton Anti- Virus. After this, even though I have my pc to give blue screens upon errors, the pc rebooted!

After all is said and done, it will not boot up and states: Missing Operating System”.

Does anyone have any Idea what happened?!?! My CPU was at 57 degrees, so I se no problem there. I amthinking hard drive or motherboard now.

Help please!!!!!!!

Have you tried replacing the memory? A lot of XP bluescreens result from bad memory. I'm telling you, try running the system with just one stick of mem.

Right now I have to reformatt, for some reason after a reboot I had an eror, Missing operating system. I think my MBR got screwed from Powerquest Drive Image. I tested the memory, at a PC stor, Memtest86 and Simmtester, no errors. I put in a new PSU, sound card and now I am reformatting. I will post what happens next.

Oh yea, I also used powediag from maxtor to check the drive and it was fine. I am starting to think that if it persists it is the mainboard or Proc.

I understand that you TESTED the memory. However, that doesn't mean it is absolutely good, and that all your memory sticks are compatible. Like I said, the only way to know for sure is to replace the memory, or try running the machine on ONE stick of memory.

My processor was fried the whole time. I brought it to my local shop and they looked at it and tested it, and it was done. I bought a new 1800+ and I am formatting now....wish me luck!

hank - do u know anything about 'bad contact'? Give a little space between motherboard and the inside of cover. Don't press RAMs into slots too hard. Loosen up the screws, etc. I got the problem when installing RAMs, they said i pressed RAMs too hard.
