Red face DVD and CD problems

I just purchased a new Gateway desktop 2 weeks ago, When I insert a CD or a DVD it shows as no space used and no space available.
I want to save my photos as I do them to a CD and later put them on a DVD at the end of the month, eBay photos.
I have a read writeable CD burner and a double layer DVD burner and it shows no disk in both.
I have tried every kind of disk there are.
I did get it to work on a DVD yesterday while on the phone with Gateway , I burned one photo a very small photo and disk was shot out and full, this was a high priced one, I have ruined so many Dvds and Cd's that I cannot do this all the time.
The program that is on here is Power to Go.
I purchased the Roxio Creator 8 and cannot get it to work with that one as well.
Any help would be appreciated, Gateway sure don't know how to fix it.
They have tried to fix my auto complete so many times by doing everything and now my 15 days to return it is up and they say they will have to call me when they find out how to fix it.

Smile DVD and Cd problems

It is Nero 6 , it works great right now.
Thanks for your help, the Power to go is Cyberlink DVD and Power to go express, it came installed in this new PC, but it sure will not work on here.
Thanks for the help, I'm sure I will be back with more questions as I seem to have a new problem pop up every day.

It is a program for burning cd
s and dvd's , that is the only thing that came installed in this pc to use with my cd and dvd drive.
I guess it is just a program, it has Cyberlink, Power to go and Power to go express.
No it don't open unless I open it , I have always had trouble with cd's and dvd's , do not know a lot about them.
All I use them for is to put photos on of family, my dog and my Ebay items.
I don't do movies or anything like that on them or music.
All I want is to be able to put a folder each month of all my photos I have taken so I won't have to keep them all on my pc.
When I go to Power to go, it does have Power DVD , but you open that and a radio like player comes up , maybe I just don't know how to use it.
I have to go and open that before I get that on there. Thanks very much for your help.
