Unhappy Bad pool caller

My laptop continuously restarts itself and brings up a blue error screen with following messages:
- bad pool caller
- that I tried to install software (which I did not) and it was not properly installed;
- that I must disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing
- stop x000000C2 and others
- beginning dumping of physical memory

What is wrong and how do I correct it?

There seems to be no single, definitive cure for this problem, but I've read two which did the trick:

1. Switch to ethernet if your modem is currently connected to the PC via USB.

2. A faulty memory module was to blame.

3. A bad or incompatible device driver. Only way to confirm that is to start by unplugging all non-essential external devices one at at a time (that translates to "everything except KB, monitor and mouse"), rebooting after each device disconnection until (hopefully) the error no longer happens.

Pip is right on. I just went through that myself and was tearing my hair out. And built a new computer just in case. I stuck in a cloned drive with a fresh OS, same thing. So it's hardware, huh?, sez I. It came down to bad front USB ports, can you believe it? My external HD is now plugged in the back.

But while trying to nail it down, I read about all sorts of possibilities: bad memory (tested mine with MemTest), video card, a bunch more. Sorry I can't be of more help on this, like Pip says, process of elimination. Good luck.
