XP slow after adding new user

Hi,

I have recently added a new User account onto a friend's laptop. Before then the machine ran quickly and silently.

Since activating the second account everything is very slow - start up, shut down and general system performance. Often CPU usage will go up to 100% even though I am not using any additional programs. No new apps are showing in taskmgr, and there is no obvious process tying up the resource. Also, the fans go at full pelt the entire time the machine is switched on (even if noone is logged in...). Previously the fans would only kick in during virus scanning or similar 'hard' activity...

I have tried disk clean up, virus/malware scanning and paring down the startup services, but nothing seems to be making any difference. I have also tried some VM tweaks and adjusted the visual settings for optimal performance.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I am running XL on a laptop with a 2.5 GHz celeron processor and 224 MB ram (I know this is fairly low - but it never caused any issues before...)

Thanks

Thanks for your reply

I thought it was a weird amount - but that is definitely what is reported in the sys props... :-S

I'd thought it may have been something in addition to the RAM - as it ran so smoothly before - and all I'd done was add a new account. Do you think that multiple accounts adds that much overhead?

it will take away some of your ram for graphics, so if it says 224 it means that it is 256 only that part of that will be used on graphics so u will not see it or be able to use it. Its gutting actuallt i have 1 g of ram and a graphics card but it still takes away some of mine for graphics. Dont know how to turn off the allowance for graphics since i got a graphics card.
