Another system recovery prob

I have a 4 year old hp pavilion 7955 desktop pc and recently reinstalled XP. While I also have the sound problem many others have, I lost random data and files! Before the system recovery took place I choose the option where a backup was supposed to be made before reinstalling but I have searched and haven't found anything except for a few programs still installed from before and anything in "My documents". My music (which was not under "my music"), my pics (which weren't under "my pictures") and my videos (also not in "my documents") dissappeared . I'm just wondering if there's anyplace where they were backed up. any help will... well help thanx.

I'd also like to mention that the only reason i'm wondering is because before the system recover the hard drive was full and now after the recovery it's still full if it deleted so many items why is it still full?
