No Sound After Repairing/Reinstalling XP
Hi to all who read this,
Like many others who post here, I have a 'no sound' problem after reinstalling XP.
I'm running a Dell Dimension 4700 with XP Home Edition. Recently - possibly due to an overheating problem - my system gave me a BSOD. Went into safe mode and dl SpeedFan - main drive was at 61C and secondary drive was at 55 C. Then system crashed completely and couldn't even access safe mode. Reconnected to a second old IBM for a week while trying to reboot my Dell.
Finally reinstalled/repaired XP in my Dell (along with all drivers from vendor CDs) and managed to save most of my data. [Btw, the 'repaired XP' is in a C:Windows folder named 'Rebuilt' which was an option presented during the repair/reinstall. The old corrupted XP is still on my system - but I've been advised not to delete it.] I also cleaned out the mobo and fans w/compressed air, opened side panel and temp is now running at about 54C and 44C. The tower seems cooler to the touch.
Everything seems to work fine now but I still have no sound. Checked the connections in back of the tower. I think they're OK but I'm not sure.
I've run dxdiag and can post it here if you like.
Can you please advise me?
I'm a semi-retired senior but I've usually been able to troubleshoot most of my pc problems successfully by asking friends, relatives, or on the forums.
Thanks for your time and help.
~zenmoon
ps. I just switched the speaker cable port in the back and got sound - but with lots of static and sounding very muffled and faraway. Could I have just misconnected the speakers?
pss. My sound card info is as follows:

OK, posting excerpts from my dxdiag printout. Possible problem is bolded in red. Not sure what this means or what to do. Don't want to delete files w/o checking here first. Please help! Thanks. ~z

Thanks Barbara - but do I need to uninstall the earlier drivers first?
Hi Barbara,
OK thanks. Glad you replied since you are the 'sound queen' on this forum.
Your reply raises some questions for me. My questions are: Haven't I already installed this driver with the Soundblaster CD Dell sent me? (I've actually installed it several times) Or does your link relate to a different aspect of onboard audio?
Also I downloaded a driver from Creative online as well. How many drivers does one need - might they conflict with each other?
Should I use DriverCleanerPro as one person on a different forum recommended? I'm getting confused....
Also, should I delete the DX files noted in red above as recommended by the dxdiag?
Thanks for any help you can give. It's much appreciated.

Thanks for your time and help.

ps. I just switched the speaker cable port in the back and got sound - but with lots of static and sounding very muffled and faraway. Could I have just misconnected the speakers?
pss. My sound card info is as follows:
Driver Provider: Creative
Driver Date 6-9-2004
Driver Version 5.12.1.315
Digital Signer: MS Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

Is Device Manager showing any yellow ? or ! marks. The Dimension 4700 motherboard has onboard sound, to use the sound card it may need to be disabled in the BIOS. The driver I would install from Dell is the Chipset, this will install the INF files. To get the driver for you creative card then the model would need to be known.
This is the link to your Dell drivers http://support.euro.dell.com/support...os=WW1&osl=EN#
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING ANY DRIVERS JUST IN CASE
Hope this helps

The Chipset driver is a motherboard driver and is installed even before the OS, it tells the OS which INF files to load. Intel advise installing before any other driver, it does relate to PCI devices. Intel explain it better, look at this
************************************************** **********
* 1. OVERVIEW
************************************************** **********
The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs
Windows* INF files to the target system. These files outline
to the operating system how to configure the Intel(R) chipset
components in order to ensure that the following features
function properly:
- Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
- AGP Support
- IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
- SATA Storage Support
- USB Support
- Identification of Intel(R) Chipset Components in
the Device Manager
This software can be installed in three modes: Interactive,
Silent and Unattended Preload. Interactive Mode requires
user input during installation; Silent Mode and Unattended
Preload do not.
This software also offers a set of command line flags,
which provide additional installation choices. The command
line flags are not case sensitive. Refer to Section 4 for
detailed descriptions of these flags.
Important Note:
The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility is
distributed in two formats: self extracting .EXE files
(INFINST_xxx.EXE) or compressed .ZIP files (INFINST_xxx.ZIP).
Depending on which distribution format is being executed, the
command-line syntax may differ. Refer to Section 4 for more
details.
Hope this makes it clearer.

OK thanks for the clarification on drivers
Hi 'Queen' Barbara,
I was out of town for a day and couldn't respond sooner. Thanks for the clarification re drivers. It helps to know why we're doing what we're doing when troubleshooting a computer (or anything else...)
Yes, there are some yellow question marks in Device Manager:
Other Devices, Ethernet Controller and Multimedia Audio Controller. (aha!)
Glad you asked! Should these be deleted?
(I'm using the USB port for DSL cuz I don't have an ethernet card, or do I? Anyway, it never worked with the DSL setup.)
As for the BIOS, I checked the onboard sound and the default was set to 'on' - but I turned it off and on again just as a test. It didn't seem to make a difference.
So it's time to dl this driver and see what happens...
Will keep you posted. O yes, I have set several system restore points - they saved me (along with my avast av program, of course) when malware found its sneaky way onto my Dell.
Stay tuned...and thanks again. I'll post the results asap.

THANK YOU, SOUND QUEEN BARBARA!!! (aka bookworm) It's so good to have sound again - I'd almost given up hope.
Hadn't been downloading the chipset driver - only the audio drivers.
So I cleared my temp files, uninstalled Soundblaster, created a system restore point and then downloaded the chipset driver from Dell. (Why don't they just tell you to do this in the first place???)
Anyway, then reinstalled Soundblaster from the CD DELL sent me and - upon restart - VOILA! Beethoven's 9th came 'soundblasting' through my speakers. Thanks so much, Barbara. You saved me from starting all over and reformatting XP again...(not fun)
May the music of the spheres always resonate in your ears and may the longtime STT sun shine upon you.

One more bump for all those frustrated Dell 'no sound' users
Happy Listening indeed, bookworm!
One last question: Should I delete those Other Devices which are showing a yellow question mark? (see above post #10)
If you have time. I know you are one very busy lady on this forum.
cheers,
~z

Multimedia audio should have gone, Ethernet is your DSL. Use Device Manager to install, right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Devive Manager > right click problem device > click Update Driver - say no to connecting to Internet > Next > select Install software automatically > load Recovery CD > Next
The Hardware Wizard will find the driver on the CD and install
or download from Dell > Network > Intel PRO/100

Thanks again Barbara-no more yellow question marks!
Thanks once again Barbara. You are - as we used to say - 'a sharp cookie.' LOL
I downloaded the network driver from your link - it went smoothly.
Uninstalled the Audio Controller and now there are no more yellow question marks in Device Manager.
I feel like everything is working as it should.
God bless you and take care.
