Compacting Outlook Express

Is there any way to schedule the compacting of Outlook Express, ver 6.00.2 or shutting off the auto comapacting, vs letting the damn program compact whenever it wants to. When in auto compact it begins compacting whenever it wants and locks up my computer, using all the ram, and disables me from normal use of the computer. It sometimes takes 20+ minutes until it's done!
