secure my ad hoc network

hi, I have just setup a brother dcp 340cw wireless printer to my laptop using an ad hoc network, it all works fine but i would like some advice on securing this connection as i assume there is a security risk with an unprotected link.
i am running windows xp and there is just my laptop and the printer connected wirelessly, my internet comes from a cable box via usb.

If you don't have a wireless internet connection set up there is no security risk.

is it not possible for another wireless pc to access my data, say the house nextdoor for example because i can detect 4 wireless networks from my home?
