Unhappy COM port busy with GPS

I have rec'd my Magellan Meridian Gold in the mail....It comes with the old COM port style connection.

To set it up orginally, you first update the "firmware" to the
GPS. I hooked it up as per instructions, and it worked great...took
less than 5 minutes! (so I know the unit talks to the puter). Then,
I installed the mapping software, and it now says it is unable
to communicate with the GPS. A check of the settings shows the
COM port busy now! There is a test you can do initially to the
COM port, and it comes up and says "found Meridian"...but then
the port goes busy! Same thing happens if I try the other COM
port. If I go into Control Panel...I can disable, re-enable the
COM ports, and it does the same thing again.....finds the Meridian,
but then the port goes busy...any ideas anyone????

I had a similar problem with my Magellan Sport Track Map. I got a serial port to usb adapter (magellan doesn't make the connections in usb, don't know why) but this solved my problem. The adapter is availible through most comp. stores and Radioshack. Also Make sure the software is compatible with the gps unit (correct NMEA compliance).
Good Luck.
