Sluggish CD/DVD player

My CD/DVD player has become quite sluggish- it plays but it plays slowly and isn't very smooth. Media player plays MP3 files and such just fine.

Drive will write files to CD's and copy files to disc

Wix XP Home Emachines T5026- nothing fancy

Any ideas?

Two thing to do:
1. run the disk defragmenter Start-All Programs-Accessories-Sysyem tools-disk Defragmenter. (disable anti-virus before running it).

2. Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device manager

Click plus sign next to "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"

(a)Double-click 'Primary IDE Channel'
(b)Click 'Advanced Settings"
(c)Where it says 'Transfer Mode', select "DMA if available".
(d) Click OK.

Repeat steps a-b-c-d for 'Secondary IDE Channel' also.

Now reboot.

I seem to have 2 entries under device manager for Primary Channel and one for a secondary channel- The read only CD drive has not worked for some time.

Only one of the entries for Primary has a diable option - the other does not.
