Click Here to open a Kelly's Korner page.

On that page, scroll down to line 113 and in the left-hand column, click on "Enable" to download a small .reg file. Save it to the hard drive.

Once you have it downloaded, run it according to the directions at the top of the Kelly's Korner page.

If your antivirus objects to running the file, ignore it. The files from Kelly's Korner are safe.

The problem is often caused by malware; either spyware or a virus. Once you have Task Manager running again, you should do complete system scans with your antivirus and some spyware removal tools.

Enable or Disable TaskManager

Hi,

Just go to:

• Click Start
• Click Run
• Enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and click OK
• In the Group Policy settings window
o Select User Configuration
o Select Administrative Templates
o Select System
o Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options
o Select Remove Task Manager
o Double-click the Remove Task Manager option

On the other hand, gpedit.msc is not available in XP Home. Of course, we don't know which version kenk is running.

Since kenk hasn't posted back since his original post on March 11, I guess he either fixed it or gave up.

Enable Or Disable Task Manager in Windows XP Home & Professional

Hi,

For Windows XP Home Edition use "The registry edit & For Windows XP Professional you still use the option I had suggested which is:

• Click Start
• Click Run
• Enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and click OK
• In the Group Policy settings window
o Select User Configuration
o Select Administrative Templates
o Select System
o Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options
o Select Remove Task Manager
o Double-click the Remove Task Manager option

I hope this Info has helped you.

hi here is resolution

Click Start -> Run. Type in "regedit" (no quotes) and hit Enter.

Search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System.

Look for: DisableTaskMgr. Click on REG_DWORD. Value: 1=Enable this key (disables TaskManager); Value: 0=Disable (actually enables TaskManager)

Close RegEdit

Reboot your machine.

Hi All. My problem is slightly different. I'm getting the message that the Administrator disabled task manager, although I am administrated, and the only user. I tried to follow info from this thread but found out that the 'run' option is no longer there. Also I have been disabled from editing the registry, and my only option for ceasing my activity on the computer is Logoff. I recently had the Trojan.Vundo virus which I have successfully got rid of, but obviously there has been a small bit of registry damage done. I can create a new account, and have all privileges, but ideally, I would prefer to keep my own screen which is heavily customised. Any help would be appreciated. Running xp professional sp2.

I have the same exact problem as the poster above me. I've tried all those suggestions to fix the tsk mngr and none of them have worked. And it seems not matter what scans i do (got adaware and spyware begone) i cant kick all the viruses or spyware. The red desktop is really annoying.

I registered here only to reply this thread, I got same pronlem and I got temparory solution--Install -->http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...sExplorer.mspx

and delete red coloured processes. It will kill all virus processes which were to max your cpu uses and make Task manager essential. When these virus processes will no longer be running, you will definitely get task manger .

This thread seems to have morphed into a general "task manager" problem clinic.

birjukhunti .... yes, it definitely sounds as if you have been infected by something. There is at least one exceptionally nasty piece of malware in the wild that can disable task manager.

You should do this .....

Go here ….

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...?page=download

Click on “Download HijackThis Executable” ….

Click “Accept” on the Terms ….

From the menu click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile".

DO NOT choose to upload the scan report to Trend Micro.

Start a new topic in this forum then copy and paste the HJT logfile to that thread. More specific removal instructions will follow for any malware revealed.

Everyone ... please start your own new topic in the forum. Many users posting in the same thread makes it unmanageable and means none of you will be fixed up.

Unhappy enable taks manager 4 other users

I am the adminstrator. I have a dell 8400 media center pc running windows xp. in addition to me there are 2 other users on the computer but i am the only adminstrator. neither of the other users can get acess to use windows task manager when they run into trouble. I can only use it on my account. on their accounts an attempt to use task manager gives an error that task manager has been disabled by the administrator .... but not to my knowledge! how do i enable task manager for the other 2 users?
