XP Reinstall-No Sound-SoundMax Integrated

I have recently reinstalled Windows XP on my VPR Matrix 6100. It has an integrated sound controller. I have been reading through this website for days and have not been able to solve my problem. I am deferring to the Bookworm as she seems to the goddess of audio problems.

I have no errors or conflicts in my device manager.
Modem #9 Line Playback which shows in the info below is not listed as any device in my device manager.

I have already done the following:
Retrieved the latest available drivers from the Intel website
Uninstalled SoundMax - Rebooted - Cancelled the New Hardware found wizard - Reinstalled Sound Max.
Disabled my modem - tried the above procedure again.
Turned acceleration all the way off - rebooted
Turned acceleration back on - rebooted
Ensured that the Windows Audio Service is on

did you install No:9 the INF chipset drivers, this needs to be installed - then RESTART the comp, then the audio drivers.

I think I tried to install the chipset utility, but I received an error message. I will try it again when I get home from work and post the results.

I updated the chipset per your instructions, but I still have no sound.

After updating, I unstalled the SoundMax drivers, rebooted, reinstalled the SoundMax Drivers, rebooted. Nothing. Any other ideas?

Also, at the end of the reinstall of the SoundMax application, the following error message appears:
This audio driver requires an update to the Microsoft Windows 98 SE and Windows 2000 operating system audio components.

hey im a noob here, but i really need some help, i also have no sound on my ibm thinkpad i series 1200 model 1161, i just aquired this laptop and do not know all the specs on it, but ill tell what i do know

win xp home sp2
500mhz celeron processor
6gb hdd
192mb ram(64mb originally)

when i look under device manager, xp recognizes the audio controller as "Intel(r) AC'97 Audio Controller", but says it has failed to start, ive looked all over for literaly 7hrs total for a driver, and i cant find one, not even on the manufacturers site, ive checked all over ibm.com, lenovo.com, and intel.com, lenovo has drivers for all but my specific model

sorry i cant provide more info, but ive come across many post leading to this site, and it seems like you give a lot of help here, hope you can help me out, any help will be very appreciated

Can you check the model it should have 1161xxx ( the xxx is 2 numbers and a letter this will pin the model down )

or get Belarc and copy a paste the report omitting software and win update section, it seems this model changes depending which country it is sold in http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Well they don't have a driver for XP the latest is for Win2k it's here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...id=MIGR-4L2PPX

now you can try this driver, read the TXT document on installation.

Or poat a Belarc report to see if it lists the driver ( Lenovo don't give the driver name ) and see if it's available for XP http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...id=MIGR-4L2PPX

If it says your controller failed to start, try looking in services Start -> Run -> Services.msc and see if Windows Audio is started. If so then you might have a problem with the driver. I did a background check on my drivers, if you installed drivers on there just be sure they are the right ones. Same with the chipset too, normally its with the manufacturers website. If you can't find it i'll look into it.
