High Cpu Usage

Hi All

Please can anyone help!!!

I have a HP Pavillion Laptop 14mths old, dv5000. with a AMD Turion Proc 64 mobile tech ML37. It has Synaptics Ps/2 port touchpad mouse.

The problem started with the left mouse button freezing up and not selecting items corrrectly ie: dragging all cells on a Excel spreadsheet and not deselecting tbs in Firefox. Now the CPU usage has gone through the roof ie firefox 100%, Excel spreadsheets 100%. I have reconfigured the mouse so its now a lefthanded mouse ie I use the right button which seems to help but the CPU usage is still on max most of the time. I have unistalled Norton to see if this would help but no avail. I ahve used Adware and Spyware etc to no avai. The computer also takes numerous tries before it starts up when it constantly freezes.

Please Help I am at my wits end!!

Reagrsd

Check your services running. You can disable indexing and several other services to eliminate a lot of computer usage. Check out the information.

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.c...id=1759&page=2

Also check out your startup programs. You really only need firewall, antivirus and antispyware programs at startup.

You need to be methodical here to get to the root of the problem.

First a clean out of general malware & check of your HJT log ....

Make sure you have exposed all Hidden Files & Folders.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.

***********************

If you are on Windows 2000 or XP ....

Download Ewido/AVG Anti Spyware from here ….

http://www.ewido.net/en/

It has a fully working 30 day trial period.

Install it and update it to the latest definitions.

Do NOT use it yet.

Now boot to safe mode. Here’s a “how to” if you’re not sure ..

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406

When in safe mode run a full system scan with AVGAS and let it fix what it wants to.

REMEMBER TO SAVE THE SCAN REPORT and also remember where you saved it.

Reboot to normal mode and use the computer as you would usually do.

[FOOTNOTE > this is a good program to use as an “on demand” scanner even after the trial period is over. Keep it updated and use it to scan your computer from time to time].

*******************

If this doesn’t succeed in fixing the problem download a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from here …….

http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe file and it will self-extract into its own folder ……

C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Go to this folder and run the hijackthis.exe file.

From the menu click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile".

Copy and paste both the AVG AS scan report and the HJT logfile to this thread. More specific removal instructions will follow.

Hi

Glad to hear things are improving. Few more issues.

firewall

Please make sure you have only one firewall and one antivirus in operation at any one time and that they are fully up to date always.

HJT fixes

Open HJT ... click on scan ... put tick/checkmarks next to the followings entries IF they are still present ...

Remember to close ALL open browser windows – including this one – before clicking on “Fix Checked” at the foot of the HijackThis window.

Java

Your Java is a little out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications"…..

  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

start up

You are starting the computer in selective start up mode. This means that there may be processes/files on your system that don't show in the HJT log.

If you want a further HJT log reviewed in the future please enable all items at startup so we can see exactly what's going on.

Other than that ... you are clear to go.

Safe surfing.

The log is free of malware.

I still notice reference to AVG and Norton in the log. I trust you are NOT running more than one antivirus at any one time. It is dangerous to run two or more installed AV programs (see my remark in my last post).

As to why "it" happened there is no obvious answer. One of the reasons for my recommendation of AVG Anti Spyware was that it kills off malware that HJT doesn't see and which is difficult to remove manually.

All I can say is ... if everything is now working as it should try to make sure it stays that way.

If you are certain you have no more trouble you should clear out all old System Restore points then immediately create a new one so you have something to fall back on should anything go awry again. Also remember to make SR points on a regular basis.

More on System Restore ...

There is a little duplication but these tutorials are both well worth reading.

Don’t forget to keep AVG Anti Spyware updated and use it to scan your computer from time to time.

If you do suffer an infection again you should run first Ccleaner to clean out your system. Get Ccleaner here but ensure you install it WITHOUT the optional Yahoo Toolbar download (you must untick/uncheck the relevant box on download) …

Also run through this before posting another HijackThis log …
