No sound after reformatting & XP upgrade

Have read a fair few threads on this issue and think I have identified & downloaded the correct original drivers from the Sony Vaio site:

http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/preinstalled/preinstalled.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=1&se rie=PCV-RS&m=1646

When I unzip the drivers I see what I presume is my audio drive folder called AudioAdi_AD1981B, and then click on install.exe ...nothing happens..my CPU makes that whirring noise as if it's about to do something and then...nothing...zip...nada...and of course my sound is not restored...I did manage to install the chipset first then tried the audio install again but it didn't work. Have also tried downloading from Sony Vaio site twice just in case of dodgy download but again it didn't work...

I read somewhere that the sound card is only ever going to work with the drivers that are on my original Recovery Disk i.e. with the XP Home that the computer was bought with and if you ever want to upgrade then it's a good idea to save the Drivers folder somewhere safe before reformatting....so that you've always go them to hand. This of course I didn't do...am I thereby stuffed?? and need to reformat yet again with the original Recovery disc and stick with Home XP? I do still have the Recovery disc but am trying to avoid using it for obvious reasons.

Here's the Belarc report for good measure:

With Sony before installing drivers, 1st install the Chipset, which you have done, 2nd the Sony Shared Library, without this nothing will install, these 2 drivers have the INF files. The problem with Sony Uk is that you cannot get individual drivers. Browse the downloaded zip file and see if this driver is there and install. Then install the audio driver.

p.s go to Sony and get the Utilities package, I suspct the Sony Shared Library could be in it http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/s...C V-RS&m=1646

Hope this helps

Sorry - am not sure what you mean....what am I looking for the inf file? an executable? can't see one..I copy the inf information in a separate post as it makes this post too long - is it useful? Not sure what you mean by: "these 2 drivers have the INF files" ?

Am I looking for a .exe file which says "Sony Shared Library"?

Can't fine one?

Have also downloaded and installed the 2 .exe files I can see in the Utilities folder. Still nothing...

Can you think of anything else?

Ok, you downloaded the Preinstalled drivers, what i would do is create a folder, name drivers unzipped, extract the zip files to there.

Look for the yellow flagged programe if not under Sound, video & game controllers, and select update

Then try installing this way

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
