Desktop background goes blank?

Can't figure this out--my desktop on my laptop is blank--just a blue screen now instead of the previous picture I had displayed. The icons are present and work fine. When I try to change it back to a basic desktop display screen under control panel/display -- it will work for a few minutes but then it just reverts to the blank blue screen again. I've run every virus, spyware, and ad-aware program I can--nothing comes up. Would love any suggestions.
Thanks.

Thank you for your help but that isn't it. I am very familiar with how to use the desktop options--change colors, pictures, etc. The desktop just keeps reverting to a blank background no matter what I select -- picture or theme. I think it may be some glitch with microsoft but I can't get a clear answer anywhere.

The fault is a problem more likely with Active Desktop

Try this:

Not sure if it's the right thing but it could work.

Thumbs down Desktop wallpaper/theme doesn't appear

Unfortunately, changing the 'active desktop' feature didn't work -- I didn't have it checked in the first place. And the screensaver recommendation didn't work either. I'm really baffled by this -- any other suggestions? anyone? I just find it really annoying.

Is the blue colour the same as the default on the desktop tab?
Select none and apply, is it the same blue screen as when you leave it for several minutes?

Does changing the screen saver time affect this at all? You replied to oldman it isn't Screen saver related but try adjusting the time and see if that elays the time at all.

If it is the same blue colour try changing the default colour, and if it turns that colour after several minutes of you being on whatever your background is, it must be related to it.

That's all I can think of.

About 6 months ago I had to sort out a friends laptop. It was running very slow etc. There was also desktop background oroblem similar to what you are describing.
The fix for that one was to update windows (which it wouldn't as it had a virus) and reset a couple of registry settings. I'll try and find out what those settings were. Their effect was (until i got it right) no background picture and/or not centralised, and/or quartered background!

Yeah good point. I'm too dumb to have thought that up.
