No monitor display, but PC boots fine.

My problem started when I changed the display properties' settings trying to get a vga monitor to work. I'm using XP Pro on a laptop (dell inspiron 8200) and it boots up fine and graphics are normal during boot, but as it starts up the display turns to a blank screen (not black).

So I cannot get to the display properties settings to fix it. I tried safe mode, but it just freezes right in the middle of the listing of the system drivers. I tried other options within safe mode like w/internet connections, etc... but freezes at the same place

Thanks for the link. I had already tried all the safe mode open options, but each stopped (froze) before safe mode acdtually finished opening.

Ok by blank do you mean the monitor actually turns off or what colour does it go?

I had a problem last year with a monitor and at the same point my monitor would turn off and would only go off at that certain point.

By blank, I mean it doesn't turn black, it has a hint of light like the display is working but not properly. I can hear windows starting up and all, but just w/no picture.

Try This Option

With the Last Known Good Configuration feature, you can recover from configuration problems such as newly installed drivers that may be incorrect for your computer's hardware. It does not correct problems that are caused by missing or corrupted drivers or files.
• The Last Known Good Configuration feature uses information that is saved from the last time that you shut down your computer to restore registry settings and drivers. Therefore, you can use this feature only if you were able to start your computer successfully before you restore your computer by using the last known good configuration.
• After you start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, changes that were made since the last successful startup are lost.

thanx for the help

I tried all those things and finally took it in today to a repair place wher they manaaged to screw up my existing hard drive. They said now they would put the drive in the freezer over night and work on it tomorrow see if it will start spinning again. I am so mad! It was spinning fine when they got it...

A question...

What are the chances they screwed it up and it's not just a coincidence that it now doesn't work???

You aren't the only one. That happens a lot.
