multimedia audio controller vs m-audio soundcard
similiar question to the other multimedia thread that was posted.
i rebuilt my computer last week (new motherboard, RAM, CPU and graphics card) and left my 'm-audio audiophile 2496' soundcard in place. i continued to use the computer ok-ish, using the existing windows xp, with sound as usual.
now i've re-installed my operating system (windows xp professional) and no longer have any sound. i keep being prompted to install drivers for 'multimedia audio controller' (The same one described by ToraNC, with the yellow question mark)
i've tried to re-install my m-audio soundcard but the new hardware wizard can't see it, and only seems to recognize the multimedia device as new hardware.
i've tried to manually add the new hardware but i'm only given a few manufacturer options and m-audio isn't one of them.
I've removed it completely and used the computer without it, then put it in again, desperately hoping it prompts me to install the m-audio drivers. i put the driver CD in but it says that it isn't relevant.
the motherboard is a winfast Foxconn K8T890M2AA.
please please help me someone

If you have a disc with the drivers on, try this way, insert disc in cd drive then close it, leave in cd driver
Go to device manager / right click multimedia device / select update driver / next / no, not this time / next / install automatically( recomeneded)
device manager should find driver on disc and install automatically
also check this
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.
Hope this helps

Thank you but no good!
It just tells me to connect to the internet (which I can’t by the way) then I say no and then it tells me that it can’t find the necessary software.
I’ve tried going back and telling it to look in the cd drive and it says that there aren’t any relevant drivers on the Cd drive (but cd does have the drivers on cos I used it to install it originally )
It doesn’t seem to know what my soundcard is, or what to look for.
If I go with the control panel option then when I go to ‘sound playback device’ it says that there isn’t any device installed.
It seems to not be able to recognize my soundcard at all.

You need to update the chipset driver, what make and model is your motherboard, does it have onboard sound. You should be able to get the driver from motherboard site
If you need a link post the make and model
Hope this helps

sorry, bit of an addition to my last reply, i just assumes that when you said update chipset drivers you were talking about the motherboard drivers. but did you mean something else? CPU is amd athlon dual core 64 2.4GHz 4600+. Soundcard is m-audio audiophile2496

2 boards at Foxconn, ( K8T890M2AA-KRS2H and RS2H ) both have onboard audio Realtek AC'97, can you check this
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.
Also in Control Panel / Add/Remove / is Realtek AC'97 showing as installed
if it is then you will need to diable onboard audio in the BIOS,
Hope this helps

Ok, after your reply i realised that i'd uninstalled the realtek software in case it was causing a conflict with my soundcard.
so i went back to the computer and thought the best thing would be to re-install realtek, then go into bios settings and disable onboard audio as you suggested.
after i re-installed i was prompted to restart. i did that and now my computer is dead. when i turn it on it goes to the initial screen (the one that says "tab to post screen, del to enter set up, esc to enter boot menu" and then it freezes and won't respond to anything.
it did the same thing earier today and i was told to reset the CMOS thing. that worked earlier and everything was fine, but now its not working and computer is n't doing anything.
please help me. this isn't looking good.

Sounds like a conflict with the audio devices, go here and have a word, you may have to remove the sound card to get the system to boot.
http://72.29.80.128/Forum/
can you get to safe mode ( press F8 at startup ) you can do a System Restore to before you installed Realtek see here on how http://support.microsoft.com/default...304449&sd=tech
Cheers :
