need help with a multimedia audio controller issue

i have a yellow ? next to my multimedia audio controller in device manager. i did recently re-install windows xp. i have tried re-installing drivers off of the dell website but the install never completes. it currently act like my audio card is one of those generic unimodem deals but i know it isnt. any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!!! here is my system info...

update. i was reading somewhere that i should try and remove the multimedia device in device manager by deleting it and then retrying the install. i got the same negative results with that. i am almost positive that the audio device is reading active in bios.

First need to check if onboard or a sound card

onboard - audio plugs near keyboard, mouse etc sockets on the I/O plate - Audio is ADI 198

sound card - near bottom of tower in an exspansion slot - audio is SoundBlaster

go here to Dell use Service tag - C0NP021 http://support.euro.dell.com/support...=uk&l=en&s=gen

first select Chipset- Intel software Installation Utility - install then RESTART your comp

then install audio driver

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

i tried to install the intell chipset first and i am still getting the same error when i try to install it. the error reads "install shield engine (ikernel.exe) failed... could not find the file. this is the same error message i get when i try to install the driver itself. is there some place i can get that specific file?
