kicked Vista for XP, now no sound
Greetings to all vise and smart heads on here!
I am newbie, on dial up with blazin 47 kb speed.... so bear with me for as sec or two;
I got new acer puter and it came with Vista business preinstalled. After a week of wrestling with it and pulling out my hair.It would not want to run most of my programs, I formated the drive, by installing the old trusty XPpro again, I think its called clean install?
did not install the service pack1 or 2 as it is a b....eg version and dont want the M&$ hasle on top of it all.
Now XP starts acting funny by denying and sound device being installed!! While the sound was just fine in Vista.
When I try to play the cd (in Nero for now) it said no device installed...
Here are some specs:
Board: Acer E946GZ
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD R01-B3 11/24/2006
--------------------------------------
c: (NTFS on drive 0) 36.53 GB 30.03 GB free
d: (NTFS on drive 0) 36.16 GB 35.95 GB free
(which is funny as I dont recall partitioning the (single)drive anyway)
-------------------------------------------------
Display: None detected.
-----------------------------------
Multimedia
I had installed ATI just to see if the sound would work, and it doesnt!
ATI TV Wonder Pro A/V Capture
ATI TV Wonder Pro A/V Crossbar
ATI TV Wonder Pro Tuner (Philips 1236 MK3)
The only listing under Multimedia before I tried ATI stuff!
//////[Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device////
My sound card is built in of course and worked in Vista.
Please help, I would be grateful. Long live XP, dam the Vista, well untill they fix it anyway.

Have you tried loading the computer's drivers from it's manufacturer website that is compatible with XP?

Hi its me again, sorry for omitting the computers model name
its: acer FH-EC 3520C
I went to the site, Dave, Bookworm sugested, thank you both!!!
however couldnt make heads or tails as to which driver I need to download. Can any of you elaborate for this rookie?
Also in mean time I went to Sounds and Audio Devices and only my dialup modem is listed as active and not bleached out...for lack of better word...
Going further into Hardware window of the Sounds and Audio Devices I see the following devices not accessible (they are bleached out)
Audio Codecs Device working properly
Location Unknown?????
The Device Usage is bleached out.
-----------------------------
And exactly the same with the rest listed below (except the ATI ones)
Legacy Audio Driver
Media Control Device
Legacy Video Capture Device
Video Codecs
All the ATI drivers though say: Use this device (enable)

Can't find the exact model, but the Acer Power FH has Realtek High Definition audio, found at Acer New Zealand, but the Vista OS at Acer Europe also kists the same realtek driver, go here to Realtek http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20Codecs
download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click to install
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Hope this helps

Did you ever get this issue resolved. I have the same issue with the same machine after going back to XP and cannot find a solution.
Thank you in advance.
