Will 4gb ram work in XP?

I am looking at a new Dell, Precision 490, Windows XP, mainly for Photoshop work and would like to speed things up with 4GB of ram. However I was told that XP doesn't recognize / can't use more than 2GBs of ram nad that any ram over 2GB is a waste of money. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes, In the Dell Precision 490 I'm looking at they offer up to 4GBs of ram.

I have just purchased a Dell XPS 710 with 4GB RAM and it is sweet.....
