Sound suddenly stopped working..

Okay, this is my bro's comp and Im trying to help this comp get its sound back. I use this forum alot, but had found just everything I needed till now. His computer lost its sound, but the thing is it was working when he got this comp and hadnt formatted it yet. The sound device is there and the sound card is there and when I try to play a song on winamp, it plays the wavelengths and everything, but there isnt any sound coming out of the computer speakers. I dont know why, but he said the sound just suddenly stopped working.. Can you help me?

My bro's comp is:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Board: Intel Corporation D915GAG AAC89289-101
Serial Number: AZAG52100137
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Intel Corp. EV91510A.86A.0444.2005.0429.2108 04/29/2005

Check this out
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Start > OK Reboot.

when I went and set it to manual and rebooted and tried to play winamp i got the error "Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper devices or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078" but as I said I have Creative AudioPCI WDM installed and when automatic, I dont get that error but when manual I get that error..
