i dont know if its important, but im runnin a student version of windows that i picked up at college, two weeks ago, i did all the updates and the windows authenticator said mine was a hacked version and my computer went nuts and i had to format it. i reinstalled and its working now, just havent put on any of the updates out of fear of the almighty gates.[/quote]

It's the motherboard and hardware I need Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.

That board has onboard Realtek AC'97, but Belarc shows a Envy24 sound card.
This is onboard, he's pointing to the I/O plate are your audio plugs on this plate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQzgQ39ovZY

or are they much lower down, near bottom of the tower in an exspansion slot.

Check these out first

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

if this does not work, then you need to go into the BIOS, post back for info on how to if need be

Go here to Via and install the 4 in 1 chipset driver, then Restart your comp
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...D=1&CatID=1070

this will install the INF files, then install the audio driver from the Aopen link
instructions on installation are given

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

I saw this solution on another site and I am quoting it to you in hopes it will work for you.

[On the desktop, right-click on "My Computer".
Click on "Manage".
Click on "Services & Applications".
This brings up a list headed "Services".
Scroll down to "Windows Audio".
Double-click on it, then on "Recovery" tab.
This brings up three windows for what Windows should do in the event of failure: on the first occasion, on the second occasion and on subsequent occasions.
The options are "Take no action" and "Restart the service".
I found them all set to "Take no action", and reset them all to "Restart the service".
Windows then tried to restart the service, succeeded in doing so and I had my Audio Device back.
Hope it works for you.]

Good Luck
