Kernel_data_inpage_error

Hi This is my Spec

Abit BD7 Motherboard
1.8ghz P4
512 DDR RAM
16x CD writer
2x 40gb hard drive
1x 120 gb hard drive
midi man delta 66 sound card
soundblaster sound card

Primary master = 40gb harddrive
Primary slave = 40 gb hard drive
Secondary master = cd writer
secondary slave = 120 gb harddrive

After purchasing a new 120gb harddrive, i decided to remove the partition on the primary master drive, so that it was back to its original state, so i had plenty of room for a fresh install of WinXp Pro, and give me space for games. Whilst doing this i ran into a problem on restarting an error message appeared saying my "NTLDR is missing", anyway i tried everything and ended up placing the primary master drive into another computer and formatting it, i then installed windows xp onto it.

I placed it back into my computer installed all the drivers for my pci cards etc. and some appz. After using the computer for about 30mins a hard drive (persumably the primary master) decided to go crazy a bsod appeared with the following error:

Kernel_data_inpage_error
technical
Stop: 0x0000007A (0XE14D1CBC,0X000000E, 0XBF8F5C8F, 0X15D80860)
Win32k.sys
Address BF8F5C8F base of BF800000, Date Stamp 3B7De698
Beginning dump of physical data...

I decided to restart the computer, i found it the ide drives could not be found so i had to turn the computer off by removing the power lead for 10 secs, then i turned it back on and they were recognised and windows started as normal, i carried on using the computer when about 2 hours later the same error appeared.
I then made sure all jumpers were set correctly, and they were. I restarted. I left the computer on for 2 days solid and no problem, but halfway throught the third day the computer came up with the same error.

Now i've looked on various tech forums, and tried the microsoft webpage, can't seem to work out, but i did find out how to find your event properties, i found this under a warning sign:

"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation. "

Also under a stop sign:

"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period."

I asume my drive has had it?
Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,

I've got the very same issue.

Was there ever a solution to this? I think it may be the new hd I've just purchased as it was fine before

Thanks

Have you run chkdsk?

My Computer > C: > (right-click) Properties > (tab) Tools > (under Error-checking) "Check Now" > put a check in both boxes. You'll be told that the operation can't be done while Windows is running, so re-boot.

If it was as simple as that Id be a happy man!

To be honest, I just upgraded my hard drive (western digital) from 20 gb to 120gb, both the same make.

The system started off recognising it sometimes, then other times it wouldnt. Then it said the drive was 15gb or something and so I then updated the bios to current and set to LBA Assisted and Max UDMA, and so I managed to load XP on, but then it keeps on blue screening, and does whenever I try and load SP1 on.

The jumper settings are correct and its on a 40pin 80 wire IDE cable connected fine.

Im at my wits end with this darn thing!! I bought a Tech TV upgrading book today to understand a bit more about my bios settings and PIO/ Ultra DMA etc. I have just in fact finished repairing xp since when i tried loading sp1 last night it bombed out half way through and wrecked half the system!

Anyone else got any ideas?!!

Have you tried a spare ribbon/cable? Its not uncommon for an end connector to get damaged pulling it off and putting it on. Cables are cheap.

I think you're right, it may be the cable. I'd tried just about everything else, and thought it was just about ok. However I've now swapped the CD and HDD cables over and it seems to be responding a lot quicker, and I've downloaded/installed app's I couldn't before.

If it doesnt work then I'll post back on here so a record is kept of it.

Thanks for your help.

Still a problem with this thing.

I dont know if I've got the correct bios installed. My system is a Compaq Evo 510 SFF workstation. My bios is v3.18 but Im not sure its correct which may be causing the issue.

Also, does anyone have any experiences of Power Supplies affecting hdd's?

I found one line wouldn't power my hard drives so I switched with the CD-Rom line and everything worked. It's a very tight fit since the cables are almost the exact length

Ive been reading the forum's on the Western Digital site and it looks like everyone has been having problems with their drives one way or the other.

I also have an intermittent clicking sound where it sounds like its switching off then recovers. Strange.

I tried swapping them over yesterday - but didn't make any difference. Thanks for suggesting it though.

Unhappy kernel_data_inpage_error

I've been having the same problem. I've got a Chaintech MB 7AJA2E, but with a 12GB Geni HD. I thought it was my bios chip, ordered another one but had the same problem. I found a workaround, sort of....

I'll power off completely, then reboot with my Win2K CD in the CDROM. If I don't have it in there, I'll get a DISK BOOT FAILURE. If I leave the cd in, I'll get the message "press any key to boot from CDROM" but I'll just let it boot, then it boots normally. I thought that my MBR was corrupted, so I formatted the entire disk with a single partition...same thing.

as to the orriginal post, ryan_the_razer, if you installed xp while the drive was in another computer chances are it wont boot, it seldom does in this situation, if you have a bootable copy of xp on cd, just drop it in and install the operating system over the top of it's self, it will install the drivers and support for the hardware you have in the computer you run the drive in, as for western digital hard drives, make sure the jumpers are correct, to the setup you have and make sure to use a cable that supports the drive, ultra ata 33 cables that come with cd drives and older hard drives will not work on the ultra ata 100/133 drives they will give errors of all sorts, even bad drive errors.

Hi All,

for th record I sent my WD1200BB back to the supplier as faulty. There cant have possibly been anything else. I put my WD 20gb hdd back in and it works without any problems.

The jumper settings etc were correct as I phoned WD to clarify

I have experienced the same error. I had the HD and CD-ROM on the same cable as Master and Slave, but after puting the CD-Rom on a single cable as primary master it worked just fine.
Thanks !

Found out that my cable was bad...replaced it with a new one and worked ok. Only found out after buying a new MB, and a new 120GB HD. It would recognize the old HD as Master (but with the wrong size) and the new HD as slave as 120GB. If I switched them, it would recognize the 12GB as a 12GB and the 120GB as a 16GB drive (if it didn't report errors). A new cable resolved that problem.

Kernel_data_inpage_error

I was having this same problem - Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error - plus a page with - (window root\system32\ntoskrnl.exe).

I put a new ribbon cable on my hard drives and it has seemed to have fixed it.

It has been about 4 days now and I haven't had the problem since I put the new cable on.

Nick
