Unhappy XP Problem

I've read through a bunch of posts on here and other sites.
I first had an occuring Error of the file:
vg64k or vga64k I can't remember.
I fixed this problem by putting a different video card into the computer, which is currently behind me running.
I don't Error anymore, which is the odd part.
If needed, I do have AOL Instant Messenger, which would be great if someone could contact me on there and help me out.
First off, my computer took almost TWO DAYS to install windows XP
It's a Pentium III processor with 512 RAM
It ran fine before.
It also did this when i tried installing Windows 98.
But now that XP is up, even though it takes FOREVERRR to load up, it stays on a greenish-blue aqua screen, and doesn't load my desktop or anything.
It's wierd, because I can Ctrl-Alt-Delete and my task manager pops up.
I've gone to New Task
and run msconfig, and tried putting it into Safemode, but it still didn't work.
It's still currently doing the same thing.
I've been working on this for a few days now, which is a big problem.
The computer was given to me by my brother, who got it from a friend who couldn't whipe the Hard Drive.
I did that and created a new partion, and when I got windows 98 installed, it worked fine, which is confusing me even more.

Please Help.
