XP Pro Undereading drive size

Hi...
IA friend is trying to install a new 500 gig hard drive.
The bios is reading the drive size as 500gigs but when it comes to installing XP Pro Windows its telling me that its only 130 gigs....
he's been running XP Pro with SP1, if he has both SP1 & SP2 installed and then runs check disk will that solve the read problem?
Thanks
Bari.
