Unhappy Cannot get past the Welcome Screen on XP

After installing Norton Systemworks, the computer restarted on CHKDSK. Then it re-started again. I gets to the Login Screen with all the users listed, but it does not respond. I tried the recovery mode where I can run chkdsp /p and chkdsk /r but still can not get pass the login screen. Not even in safe mode. Help!!!

I hate NSW, when it does things like this. looks like you are going to have to do a 'repair' intallation. Go to install windows as from scratch but pick the option to 'repair' when you get to that screen option.

Last thing you can do is reinstall the operating system

hi DaveC2003
I didn't suggest that, I suggested a 'Repair'. Thinks it's better than a complete reinstall unless he doesn't worry about having to personalise his settings again.

I run PC Doctor and was told by the diagnostic program that I had problems with the Hard Drive. Went and bought a new one, installed and cloned it with Acronis true Image 10. This SW promises to make the computer bootable with the new drive. I got to the same point. Is there a command line program that allows to remove Norton? The repair option sounds great but I don't have the Windows XP disk. This HP computer made me do some recovery disks and don't know how to make a "Repair" without a Windows Disk. Suggestions?

What size was your old hard drive and what size is the new one?
I had a quick look here but this I found under the FaQ for NS 2005 Standard edition. If that's not yours then pick another version. It may help.

Old Drive 300 GB. New Drive 500 GB

I'm runing the Acronis program again after re-formating the new disk. I didn't do it before and the cloning process got screwed out. Hopefully this time I'll hit Jackpot. Otherwise I'm going to be forced to buy a Windows XP upgrade disk to perform the "Repair". Will it do it with a new Upgrade disk?

Could you not 'borrow' a friends 'backup' of XP? You must use your original license key though.

Angry Recovering Outlook express Data files

I just gave up. Was trying to avoid the hassle of re-installing all the apps and recovering the data files from the old drive, but I had to do it. I'm been working most of the day on it. Since this HP computer does not bring a WinXP disk, I had to use the recovery disks to get the CPU up and runing (as delivered from factory). What has me at crossroads right now is how to imort all the data files from the Outlook express program files directory into the new one. Any ideas?

Thumbs up How to Recover Outlook Express Data

Continuing with my saga:

I was trying to restore the mail folders and address books for Outlook express. After some googling, found a miriad of programs that promised to do so. I'm past the point of believing everything advertised....got burned so many times. Therefore, I will not buy anything that won't allow me to use first. Not even the so called "limited performance". Tried 4 or 5 different programs....they can not even find the old .wab and dbx files, let alone restore them. Some of them will only restore backed up files.

Went to good old Microsoft and found a painless way of doing it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3130...578&sid=global

The only instruction missing from there is that before you click the search button, you need to go into the advanced menu and specify to look into the hidden files. I found all the files and imported them as said in this web page. The only thing to do manually is to re-create the account information. Piece of cake.

Now,.....of to mow the lawn.

Cheers,

Luisfm

Talking More on Outlook file recovery process

One "little" detail I forgot to mention:

In order for Outlook's Import function to find the wab and dbx files in the old drive, I had to go to the tools menu in Windows explorer and set it to show the hidden files, sine these files are stored in some hidden directory. Without this step, the browser in Outlook won't see the files.

Cheers
