Need help saving files to reinstall windows xp

I was getting this message on my laptop:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I have my XP disk boot from that and I pushed R for repair. I do not think is able to repair though. I get this from the recovery console:

The recovery console provides system repair and recovery functionality.

Type EXIT to quit the recovery console and restart the computer.
C:/>


So I think I am screwed, but not sure what command to type & saw the list of commands but not sure what to do with them.
I think I need to reinstall windows XP but I have some photos and documents I dont want to lose. I cant get into it at all, even in safe mode. Is there a way I can save these before I reinstall?

u dont worry this all will be there if u reinstall u o/s while reinstalling. only thing dont select format option.

Your registry has been corrupted. Can you get back into XP normally before the problem starts?
