Cannot delete .dll file suspected spyware....Help!

I've been trying to delelte a msqnx.dll & msddx.dll from my system, I suspect its spyware as every time I start up my computer it adds shortcuts on my desktop to internet sites that have advertisements to online security programs. Also,Every five minutes it says that i have malicious software on my computer and starts up IE and tries to connect to the online security webpages (I've disconnected the internet now).
I've tried ad-aware and antivirus programs, they do not detect it. Windows wont' allow me to delete it? Is there a program that I can by to delete this or is there a trick to deleting these?
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi kshre

I suggest you print this out to help you follow my advice.

***********************

Make sure you have exposed all Hidden Files & Folders.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.

***********************

Download and install Superantispyware here ….

http://www.superantispyware.com/down...NTISPYWAREFREE
  • Load SUPERAntiSpyware and click the Check for Updates button.
  • Once the update has finished, exit SUPERAntiSpyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while SUPERAntiSpyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Open SUPERAntiSpyware and click the Scan your Computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then click Next.
  • SUPERAntiSpyware will now scan your computer and when it’s finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them, and then click Next.
  • Click Finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • It could be possible that it will ask you to reboot your computer in order to delete some files after reboot.
  • I'll need a log afterwards of what has been found.
  • To get the log, click Preferences and then click the Statistics/Logs tab. Click the dated log and press View Log and a text file will appear.
  • Please post the results of the SUPERAntiSpyware log in your next reply.

***********************

Rehide your Hidden Files & Folders by carrying out the reverse operation to that described at the start of this post & reboot to normal mode.

*******************

If this doesn’t succeed in fixing the problem (quite likely) download a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from here …….

http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe file and it will self-extract into its own folder ……

C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Go to this folder and run the hijackthis.exe file.

From the menu click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile".

Copy and paste both the Superantispyware scan report and the HJT logfile to this thread. More specific removal instructions will follow for any malware revealed.

Run a full Virus check and Anti Spware check in safe mode, then reboot.

If you have done what Monty suggests after posting this log then post a new one. Things may have changed.

If you haven't done or changed anything then do this.

Expose all Hidden Files & Folders as you did before.

*******************

Open task Manager by hitting Ctrl + Alt + Del together.

Locate this Running Process ....

mgrs.exe

IF it's still running click on it ONCE ...

Click on "End Process" at the foot of Task Manager's window.

*******************

Reboot to safe mode.

*******************

Open HJT ... click on 'Do a System Scan Only'... put tick/check marks next to these entries IF still present ...

O2 - BHO: MSVPS System - {4118A625-1B64-4ED1-A2E9-76DEC529D2D2} - C:\WINDOWS\qnxplugin.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {65D886A2-7CA7-479B-BB95-14D1EFB7946A} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [smgr] mgrs.exe

O21 - SSODL: msddx - {01D1E678-2FE9-4522-85FF-848AAF0F79D8} - C:\WINDOWS\msddx.dll

O21 - SSODL: msqnx - {6C5624B0-292D-4DD0-8D5F-68ACFAEE4E4E} - C:\WINDOWS\msqnx.dll

Remember to close ALL open browser windows – including this one – before clicking on “Fix Checked” at the foot of the HijackThis window.

*******************

Go to these files in BOLD and delete them …..

C:\WINDOWS\mgrs.exe

C:\WINDOWS\qnxplugin.dll

C:\WINDOWS\msddx.dll

C:\WINDOWS\msqnx.dll

*******************

Empty your recycle bin.

*******************

Rehide your Hidden Files & Folders.

*******************

Reboot to normal mode.

*******************

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications"…..
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

*******************

Update Superantispyware to the latest definitions and and scan your compuetr again. As before let it fix whatever it finds.

Post a fresh HJT log with an update on how things are going now. Any better?

OJ,

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!! I really really appreciate it, everything works fine. One thing I did find odd is that when I went to delete qnxplugin.dll, I could not find it I did a search for it as well and it was no where to be found. Also I did fine a msqnx.zip, which I deleted as well. Just thought you'd might like to know. Here is the lastest HJT log. A quick question: from now on should I use superanti-spyware instead of ad-aware?
Thank you so much again!!!

Well done. The log is free of malware.

If those two random named files ever turn up you know what to do with them

Yes please keep SAS updated and scan your computer with it from time to time. It will help keep the machine clean.

For the future ... remember HJT doesn't see all malware. Far from it. You must keep a watch on your computer and report any unusual happenings.

If you are certain you have no more trouble you should clear out all old System Restore points then immediately create a new one so you have something to fall back on should anything go awry again. Also remember to make SR points on a regular basis.

More on System Restore ...

There is a little duplication/crossover but all these tutorials are well worth reading.

If you do suffer an infection again you should run first Ccleaner to clean out your system. Get Ccleaner here but ensure you install it WITHOUT the optional Yahoo Toolbar download (you must untick/uncheck the relevant box on download) …

Also run through this before posting another HijackThis log …

Hello lostside

Please do not post your log on to someone else's thread even if you have similar problems.

Also you are using an old version of HJT.

Please start your own new topic and use the new version of HJT ...

Download Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 here ……

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...HJTInstall.exe
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your next post.

DO NOT use the ”AnalyseThis”button. Its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.

DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System. Someone will guide you on what to do next.
