Unhappy Drivers, writers, disks, all missing, pls help

Hi, I am running a Hewlett Packard Pavilion a530n desktop with a HPn300 DVD writer/CD writer combo. I would very much appreciate any help given for this system. Please do let me know if the information provided is not enough. Thank you so much in advance.

1. Version of XP - Windows XP Home, no service packs
2. Hardware setup - Please see Belarc list, I think that is where the data is.
3. What exactly happened leading up to the problem:
a) I uninstalled Roxio Easy CD Creator over a year ago. It wiped out my HP DVD Writer 300n [CD-ROM drive] burning system. I reinstalled WXP repeatedly. It seems to be working now, but here are the problems:
b) Since the uninstall, it will not recognize that there is a disk in the H drive, either purchased, selfmade, various manufacturers, etc. Of course it cannot copy there either since it thinks there is no disk.
c) I uninstalled and let the computer reinstall the IDE adapter from Device Manager. This reinstalled my modem.
d) when I reinstalled WXP, I had so sound card. I downloaded the Realtek'97 upgrade and it fixed that problem.
e) I downloaded the upgrade for HP DVD Writer 300n [CD-ROM drive] but it will not install it since I have no CDwriting software anymore.
f) I no longer have a single program or software that originally came with this package as the WXP install wiped everything out and there is no recovery disc. So it's just plain Windows XP.
f) I haven't done any of the upgrades listed below as each one seems to make the system worse.
Probably a separate problem is that I'm supposed to be a 56k modem, but my downloads are running at 4-5 kb/s. Is that normal?

4. Exact error messages:
there is no disk in the drive
please insert a disk in the drive
will not accept WinDVD
put in modem disk; says sp24069 is in the original modem drivers folder, and sp26633 internet sign-up security - system is not configured for this.
install chipsets from the Device Manager folder (tried and failed)
The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software
(all four items below)

In Device Manager I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and rebooted the system. It still says no software for these four with a big yellow question mark.

Code 28
The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28).

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver
solution button: Reinstall Driver
This code means the device was not installed completely.
To resolve this issue, follow the recommended solution. If that does not work, try removing the device from Device Manager and using the Add New Hardware wizard to redetect it. You may need to obtain updated drivers if the error still occurs.

5. Any antivirus, firewall software you are running - MSN firewall enabled, no antivirus installed as yet.

Your download speed of 4-5 kb/sec is normal for a 56k dial-up modem. The 56k means 56 kilobits (not kilobytes). 8 kilobits=1 kilobyte. So if you divide 56 by 8 you get 7 kilobytes/sec. Since you never get 100% performance over a telephone line, the best you can expect is around 5 kilobytes/sec.

for all those missing drivers you need to visit the HP website here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...c =en&lang=en

Try and borrow a PC connected to a broadband line if you can, as some of these downloads are quite large.
You can obtain cd-writing software free from here (it doesn't have to be the same as was supplied with the PC):

follow-up to Pip

Dear Pip,

Thanks for replying. I want to apologize for not following up, but I fell and broke my ankle, and now have been casted and booted, etc., and I was unable to get back to the computer. My husband has set it up for me where I can reach it, so I wanted to thank you for replying. I will try that website link and let you know how it worked. Thanks again!

Antoinette
