Sound issue

Hi, I've had an issue with my sound for a while now. What will happen is, ill be listening to music or something for a while and if i suddenly stop it, sometimes my sound will not work at all afterwards till i restart my computer. this also occurs when i do not listen to any form of sound for extended periods of time. choppy sound occasionally has the same affect, but rarely. I have Windows Xp and a realtek ac'97 soundcard (i'm unsure as to if this is running off my motherboard or otherwise) . any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!

The Realtek AC'97 sound-chip is almost always integrated on the motherboard as opposed to being a slot-in soundcard. If you have a 'big brand name' PC such as Compaq, Packard Bell, HP etc., there may be a driver update for the ac'97 on their website (in the customer support or driver-download pages).
