Diffrent desktop loading up! HelP!

Hi everyone, I'm at a total loss and I really need help, here's my problem.....

I have an old 8 gig hard disk drive with pics and artwork and stuff on it from ages ago. I tried hooking it up to my computer to transfer over to one of my bigger drives (I have two) So I took out one of the bigger ones and hooked up the 8 gig one but it didn't boot up so I gave up and returned everything to normal.

Problem is now when I boot up a different desktop comes up than my usual one.

Everything from my old desktop is still there in a folder with my name on it in the documents and settings section but I can't understand why this is happening and why it's going to what looks like an old desktop of my dads when the computer was his and not my own personal one. (The desktop design hs my dad's name on the start menu it and looks very old as well, more like win 98' and not at all like xp which it says it is)

I hooked up everything the way it was before and I've tried diffrent combos of the master/slave connections but it just comes up exactly the same. It's not a user account thing cos i went to the control panel and it only gave me 2 options - Administrator and Guest and I had differnt options than that.

I honestly don't know what happened because as far as I can see I've done absolutly nothing for this to happen, I didn't go and change any configurations or anything but yet it's happening every time.

Is there some way of switching back to my old desktop because it's all in a folder called 'desktop' in the folder with my name on it in documents and settings.

I know I'm probably doing something wrong and the answer is really obvious but I honestly can't see what I've done wrong.

Any info will help,

Thank you

try to remove all cables (IDE cables) from the motherboard then (wait 1 min) then reconnect and try again.

Classic or XP view
XP has two different views – XP or Classic. The XP view provides additional functionality, but looks different to Windows 2000. The Classic view is very similar to the Windows 2000 interface. University computers are set up with the XP view, but if you’d prefer the Classic view, you can change it – see below.

To change from XP View to Classic view
Left click the Start button then select Control Panel.
Select Switch to Classic View.
Then Display > Themes
Choose Windows Classic from the dropdown list, then OK, and close the Control Panel.
Right click on the Start button, then select Properties > Start Menu
Choose Start Menu and select Classic Start Menu.
