CD/DVD Drive Not Working...

I've got a Toshiba Satellite A-105 laptop. I had bought a CD today and tried to play it for some odd reason I kept getting this error anytime I tried to play it or go into the drive that said "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

So I searched it and got a Microsoft Help and Support page. I figured that since it was Microsoft, it was reliable. So I did the steps it said and it didn't do anything. And now I'm trying to play Sims 2 and I keep getting a pop-up when I try starting it up that says something about making sure the disc is in the drive and all that.

So it's not reading it now. I went back through the steps that Microsoft's page said to do, but everything is back to how it should be. Only my driver's not working now.

This has never happened to me before, either.

Any and all help would be very much appreciated as I'm a dunce when it comes to this stuff...

Check the cabling to your peripheral devices and retry the operation. If you still get this message, run hardware diagnostics. If the diagnostics do not detect a problem, contact the manufacturer.

Thanks for responding. But can you explain how to do these things? I'm really not good at messing with laptops and I don't know how to do those.

Okay I've just tried to figure out what you told me to do and it seems I can only do it if it's a desktop. This is a laptop and I'm not about to take it apart to check cables and I don't understand how to run diagnostics. Please, can someone walk me through this?
