XP Install - Why no option to upgrade?

I'm presently running Me (800 MHz, 256 MB). I bought an OEM version of Home XP (new installation). I want to an upgrade, but when I start installation, the only option it gives me is "new installation". It does not give me an option to upgrade. Am I stuck with having to wipe my hard drive and start from scratch with a new installation? (I'm aware that a clean installation is better but I dread the many hours of downloading it's going to take me to re-install all my software).

Note: before starting, I ran "Files and Settings Transfer". Afterwards realized that wasn't necessary for an upgrade, but maybe that has something to do with my problem

Thanks,
Wayne

Thanks for the link, but I don't see where it addresses my problem. I've read a half dozen installation guides, looked at onsite FAQ's and done key word searches on several sites, all to no avail.

The problem is: the guides say to select "upgrade" or "new installation". My disk doesn't give me that option. I can only select "new installation". THAT'S the problem.

Would really appreciate help because I'm stuck.

I strognly advise to format your computer and do a clean install of Xp anyways. ME stinks, ME residue stinks. If you are only given one option....well, you dont have much choice.

Seriously, do the clean install. None of your programs are going to work right in XP anyway because ME has already screwed them up. Back up your stuff and do it right.
