Cannot install Software

Hi:

This is my first post here. I have WinXP Professional. I tried installing some software from GNU. The programs unzip in a directory. When I click the setup.exe icon nothing happens. The installation process does not start. The setup.exe is by Sterling Software. Now how can I install this software? Is there a way to change the setup.exe program? Eager for your useful response.

Cheers,
Alan

Are you "administrator" when you do this. If so, the setup file may be corrupt.

Hi:

yes, I am the Administrator. The software is old, may not be meant for WinXP. Is their way to subsitute another setup.exe like a base setup.exe file to install this software.

Thanks,
Alan

I think it has something to do adobe acrobat reader

I have seen this various times on different computers with different software installs. I have just installed a fresh copy of xp on a laptop and did the windows updates. I just installed Adobe reader 8 and when I went to install Sonic record now I hit the setup.exe and nothing happened. Task Manager showed Sonic running. I read somewhere on a different forum problems with adobe reader. So I uninstalled Reader and no problem installing Sonic. Not sure but I think Reader 7 has the same problem. If you log on as a different user with administrator privileges usually the software will install also. So this is just a guess, but whatever user installs the adobe reader gets corrupted software installs somehow. Hope this helps.

Possibly a problem with the setup.exe. I have encountered that before when installing software. Which version of Adobe are you using 7 or 8??

I'd get the latest version and uninstall the older one.
