Onboard sound issue- Realtek AC97

This is, I think, not a driver problem...

Well, I scanned the forum before I posted but I was so miserably confused by the other posts/answers (many of which I think I've already done, i.e. driver reinstallation) that I decided to post a new thread. If that was the wrong action, I sincerely apologize.

My sound died three days ago, just *poof* disappeared. I've had sound problems before in playing dvds, but got around it by just watching them through the Windows Express Media Player (which is a total pain, btw). But I never had a problem with music, streaming video, etc., till now. I thought it might be a driver problem, so I did all the uninstall/reinstall fun that I've seen recc'd in this forum and in other places. And I promptly got the blue screen of death. Which really freaked me out. I tried installing the driver again, not letting Windows automatically detect "new hardware", instead manually choosing the Realtek AC97 driver. I got a Code 10. (I have no idea what that means and troubleshooting didn't clear it up at all) Also, Windows Media Player is telling me the apparently standard (for this situation) message that the file cannot play because the sound device is already in use, or etc etc etc. I don't have system sounds either.

When I check the device manager, Realtek has a little yellow circle with an exclamation point over it. In Control Panel, Realtek Audio has disappeared from the menu, and under Sounds and Audio Devices it tells me that there are no devices installed.

Here are my stats:

Toshiba Satellite A105
OS: Windows XP
BIOS Version 1.50
Intel Celeron M Processor 1.60 GHz
DirectX 9.0
Realtek AC97 onboard sound

Unless I'm completely mucking it up somewhere, I don't think it's a driver problem. But I'm at a complete and total loss for what to do next. I'm thousands of miles from home studying abroad til next September and I don't have a single clue what to do about this sound problem.

Any help would be deeply and pathetically appreciated.

Toshiba Satelite A105 has a few variations, need to know country of origin and also complete model should read A105(Sxxxx), Get Belarc http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

it should give the information needed, if your not sure copy and paste the report, not the Software Section.

Hope this helps

I'm having trouble with that link, but I'll keep trying. My computer is US made, and the complete model number is A105(S2081), I hope that's helpful in the meantime as I try to get Belarc to work. I can't seem to access the download, my connection keeps timing out, even though I'm not having any problems with any other websites.

Had a look at the Toshibs site, but no downlaod for an audio driver. The specs show it has Realtek ALC861 onboard audio, this is High Definition not AC'97 go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click to install

The site is slow

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps

Ahhhh thank you so much! You're possibly my favorite person in the universe now! ^_^ Worked like a charm! Haven't tried everything yet, but so far I've got system sound, and that's definitely a step in the right direction! Thanks again!

Realtek AC'97

I sent this recently.......

btw code 10 means that there's an IRQ conflict, probably with a USB port......

I have a similar issue and have seen others with the same problem of unrecognised AC'97 after h/w or o/s changes.

I replaced a power supply, had a problem with the USB ports, deleted and reloaded the drivers and then noticed I had no audio. I deleted the realtek drivers assuming they'd be reloaded. They weren't!

I've removed and reloaded a variety of AC'97 drivers in regular and safe mode, disabled & re-enabled AC'97 BIOS etc but all I can load is a 'unimodem half-duplex audio device.

Emachines suggest the on board audio is u/s and since a standalone card in only $20 that's probably what I'll do. I'm just frustrated I can't make it work!

Toshiba satellite a105

I periodically have this problem with my Toshiba Satellite A105, and it is caused by incompatibilities with my security software. The dvd starts working when I restore to last good configuration, but I once had to completely reinstall windows. Every now and again I have to find a new antivirus when updates are incompatible.
