Codecs

I have a Dell Latitude D820 and I would like to watch avi and mpeg files. When I open one up, Windows Media Player gives me some kind of light show instead of the movie. I can hear the sound ok, its just that the picture looks like some 1960s light show from the Fillmore East. I suspect I am missing codecs.
