i was after the exact same problem, and i heavily relied on this forum for help.
I have a solution but only for 2Ch sound.
(consider this a quick incomplete solution for you)
still... 2 front speakers are better than 2 rear speakers.
i know you probably bought a new sound card by now (i'm 3 months late after all), but this solution if for others looking for the same problem.
for 2 Ch sound. Realtek sound the green Output jack fails, but the blue one works.
in jack sensing (sound man icon), set the speaker configuration, back panel to UAJ Automatic, then connect your front speakers to the blue jack, then set the jack sensing to start, then manually set the blue jack to receive Headphone passive speakers (or any configuration that you see fit).
SPDIF to digital only, and now the important part.
the reason in my case was that a default microsoft crappy audio driver was installed, that was blocking the sound jack. so uninstall each and every sound device, except the one you need (should be media control devices, and realtek ac'97 audio should be left in) in device manager,
restart pc, and you should have your 2ch sound working.
if not check your hidden devices too (view>show hidden devices)
anyway, the problem lies with jacks and drivers.
statistically 90% of all PC problems lie within drivers.
