What happens after I backup my system?

Hello friends,

I am going to re-install Windows XP to see if it speeds up my system a bit and helps with my internet connection. I backed up my C drive, but before I re-install, I want to make sure I understand how to bring back what I backed up.

I backed up my C drive onto my secondary hard drive, whole process took 2 hours. Now what do I do once I have Windows re-installed? I am sure I have to re-install all software programs that I am using, but where does the backup part come in? What does it do?

I used Windows wizard to backup my C drive, do I use the same wizard to bring things back?

Sorry for the questions, just want to get it right the first time.

Thank you

Morriah

No!!! you dont back up your C drive! All you have to do is back up all of your important files e.g. pics, docs, music ect. You wont be able to copy your C drive back as it has hidden files ect.
How were you going to install XP again? Formatting?

If you want to make a reliable backup of everything on the C: partition so you can use the backup to restore Windows and anything else that was on the same partition, you need to buy a "disk imaging" application such as the excellent 'Norton Ghost'. If you have a DVD-writer, Norton Ghost even allows you to write the backup image directly to a DVD (or two, if necessary).

Hello,

Thank you for the advice. Yes I am re-formatting to aquire better performance. My system is somehow slowing down my internet connection.

I was told to reinstall Windows.

My systems is A AMD 2.6 duel core SLI, with 2 gig ram, 160 gig hard drive.

I had my internet provider out and they checked all my connections and modem. But my system itself is running fine, but the internet is slow as hell. I am using IE 7.0, and I tried running my DSL with my laptop, and its fine. I also tried Firefox to browse to be sure, and same thing is happening. My system is only one year old. Thats why I was told to just try and reinstall Windows.

Thank you all
