No Sound Problem

Hi I'm new to the forum and my knowledge of computers is fairly limited. I have a problem with playing music on my pc. WMP won't let me play any music and instead gives me an error warning like the one below

a 0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000

I've read a few of the other posts on the forum and am still having difficulties sorting it out. I downloaded Belarc advisor for a computer profile summary which is as follows.

Have you actually made sure your sound card is enabled in device manager / BIOS?

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled your sound card?

Hi sorry for my slow reply the serial number is 40002038000222 and the model is Advent 3219. I think the sound card is part of the motherboard as opposed to being a seperate device because i couldn't see anything that resembled a soundcard when i opened the tower up.

I appreciate your help and the replies you've already given.

DMD ;-)

That model has Realtek AC'97 go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

Download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click downloaded file on desktop to install

The site is slow

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Hi johan002. Congratulations on your upgrade. Go to the Action Centre. There may be a flag icon in your notification area near your clock that you can click on or else go to the Control Panel via your Windows Start button. Click on Troubleshooting & then click on the link for Hardware & Sound > Troubleshoot Audio Playback.

If that doesn't find the problem, go back to the Hardware & Sound page & click on Configure a Device. This will prompt Windows to look for any driver or hardware problems. If you need to update sound drivers, it should give you that option on that page but if it doesn't, go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Sound, video & game controllers & double-click on that. This will display drivers & devices. Click on your driver's name & then click on the pop-up where it says to Update Driver Software. You can direct Windows to automatically do a driver search. You can follow this procedure for System Devices Audio Controllers to do updates as well.

You can modify sound settings by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback. Make sure there's a check mark beside Speakers. For speaker configuration, open your Audio Manager from the Control Panel. Make sure your speakers have check marks shown & that your volume isn't muted.

You can find additional information if needed on the Windows Help & Support link in your Start Menu. Search for "Playing music in Windows Media Center: frequently asked questions" & click on "Why isn't there sound?".

Here are a few more Windows Tips for fixing common sound problems: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...sound-problems

Make sure all necessary Windows updates have been applied on your new Windows 7 system. Good luck! I hope this helps.
