Startup Screen Blank no icons and NO Task Manager!!!

Help

When I reboot my comp I get the windows xp blue background but it has no icons.. The mouse is there and I can move it about but screen is empty, no icons, no task bar, no start tab.. If I control/alt/delete nothing happens either.

Anyone got any ideas? Is my comp dead??

No your system is not dead...if it was then you wouldn't get anything on your screen.

Can you start the system in "safe mode" ?

First, try using the "Last Good Known" option..........if that does not work then start the computer in safe mode and use the system restore to restore the computer in previous good know state:

System restore to last date that worked

System restore to a previous date.

Both seemed to work fine in safe mode, but then on reboot got same prob.

Also tried setting up a new user.

Again, set up new user in safe mode worked fine, when i rebooted i got option of which user to use, choose new one but then nothing.

Tried going to command prompt in safe mode and typing this...

Reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs" /v ObjectName /t REG_SZ /d LocalSystem (Press Enter Key)

Again, no joy

Anyone got any other ideas?? I'm using windows xp.

I used a Dell reinstallation CD (or you can use an OS CD). Boot from CD. When prompted click Enter to install OS. When it shows the drive, click R for Repair. It will appear that it is reinstalling Windows, but it is repairing the installation. When it finished I logged in using my network id and everything was still there.

Hope this helps...

Some programs may need to be reinstalled, for example, Word and other work, but Outlook needed to be reinstalled.
