My Laptop wont get past the windows start up screen

I belive my computer had encountered a virus but my virus protection has expired, after a while the computer just showed the desktop screen with no icons or start menu so i turned it off.

Now each time i turn my laptop on it automatically goes to a black screen that gives me the following options to start windows

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with networking
Safe Mode with command prompt

Last Known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

each command takes me to the windows start up screen, where there is the windows xp logo and loads for a short whle and then cuts off and goes back to the black screen. It has done this everytime i have tried

i dont know what to do if anyone knows what i should do to resolve this problem then i would greatly appreciate it

Insert your original XP CD ROM and boot.

If it doesn't offer the boot to CD option whilst starting up, enter your BIOS and make the CD ROM the first boot device save and exit.

Follow the instructions to format and install.

Voila.


(This will delete all your docs by the way.)

But if you want to try an recover some files ect. Boot from the XP cd and when you see the Setup screen press R to start the recovery console.
