No Audio Device

I received a notice via Microsoft Update that an update was available for my audio driver. I updated without much thought and had the system shutdown to avoid serious damage. The result was no working optical drives and no sound. I have got the drives working and using C-Media can get sound when using Windows Media but there is no system sound and Device Manager states that there is no audio device. I have tried many other drivers but cannot find one that works.
The result of today's Belarc Advisor Report is shown below.

No Audio Device

Many thanks to Bookworm for offering to assist. The reason for my delay in replying is that I have been trying out your suggestions and one or two more found in another thread ie The dreaded "No Audio Device" problem.

This should be the fix to it.

Also try this to see if it finds an audio driver

Update Installation

Logon as Administrator
Right click My Computer – choose Properties
Choose hardware Tab – click Device Manager
Expand Sound ,video and game controllers
Right click audio driver – Realtek, Creative etc
Choose Update driver
The Hardware Update Wizard appears
Windows Update – click No, not this time
Click Next
Choose Install from a list or specific location ( Advanced ) radio button
Click Next
The “Please wait while the wizard searches” window appears
If it find and installs the driver click Finish
Click Close

Obviously I still have a problem or I would not be writing but to report developments to date they are.
1. I downloaded the drivers from ECS recommended in your post of 01-01-2008. Apart from a delay of over 1hour from clicking setup.exe to the installation starting all seemed to go OK and Device Manager tells me I now have VIA drivers installed. As before I have sound when using Windows Media and some other player programs but in Device Manager under "Sound and Audio Devices" I still get the message that no audio device is installed and the only audio device under the tab "Audio" is "Modem #0 Line Playback".
2. Trying the suggestion from Quote 1 produced no change.
3. Trying Quote 2 appeared to be proceeding OK. The wizard found files and started to installed but before finishing I got a blue screen with a stop message and warnings about a problem with a file having the extension .sys. The computer started to download files to the hard drive. I left it to sort itself out thinking I don't want to know, I've been here before. Fortunately when I plucked up courage to return it had restarted and now appears in a stable state back where it was before.

Sorry to bore everyone out there but having read a lot of the material in these threads I gather I am not alone in my frustration with this problem.
Any help will be gratefully received

Your audio plugs must be on the I/O plate for this driver to work, if you use an expansion slot then you have a Sound Card installed, see here, click the image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

go back to ECS and install the Via 4 in 1 chipset drivers, then Restart your comp then install audio again

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

No Audio Device

Thanks for your suggested action. First I can confirm the the Audio leads are on the I/O plate. I download the VIA 4 in 1 Drivers from the ECS website. I then unzipped them and installed. I chose to install the 3 items that were identified on the screen. Installation seemed to run normally but on completion I was informed that no drivers had been installed. However a restart was directed so I did that and then installed the audio drives downloaded earlier. Regrettably after a further restart the machine was in the same condition as before. Just to make sure I had not made a mistake I repeated the exercise but with the same result.
As you imply that the problem lies with the drivers for the onboard chips I have dabbled with the CD that was supplied with the board but there are a large number, six I think sound drivers and having had three crashes I am now nervous about trying these at random.
If you more suggestions I would like to solve the problem but my patience is wearing thin so guess yours must be too. I saw one solution suggested is to buy a soundcard but would this work I wonder?
I have to have a break for a few days, going away not having a breakdown, so will come back with renewed enthusiasm and perhaps find some more sensible ideas to try.
Once again many thanks for your time and effort. Very much appreciated.

If you have a cd then use Device Manager to install the driver

Load the cd into drive then close the program and leave loaded

No Audio Device

Hi thought I should report on progress to date. One day hope to be able to report that problem is solved!
Refreshed after a few days break I tried out your suggestion to make use of the CD that was supplied with the motherboard. I have tried several different ways of using the CD from fully automatic installation of sound to loading individual audio drivers. I have had a variety of result as you may expect but not the one I wanted. There have been two blue screens but I am pleased to note that the machine now seems to recover itself given time. There is usually no audio device in Device Manager and the optical drives are not working but I now have an audio driver on drive C that I can load and get back to square 1. I have also tried loading a variety of the audio drivers on this disc. Some don't work but some result in the usual state i.e. No audio device in Control Panel/ Sounds & Audio Devices but very good sound when using Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and Mozilla. I later read that on the CD there is a file that gives the drivers for my specific motherboard. From BIOS information I understand that the sound chip is VIA 3058 and the CD file says Sound\C-Media973x. The driver C-Media973x is on the CD so I loaded this thinking all my problems were solved but he end result is still good sound through the programs mentioned above but still no audio device in Control Panel/Sounds & Audio Devices.
In view of my experiences with drivers and the fact that the sound system obviously works when using certain programs I am inclined to think that the problem lies in Windows but I am open to any suggestions. I would like to find an answer to this problem but there are only so many hours in the day.
Many thanks for your help so far any further suggestions will be gratefully received and tried. Meanwhile I continue to read about audio systems. I have learned a lot since this problem started but am still a long way from expert understanding!

Use this to check if any of Windows system files are faulty

Try a System File Check go to Run – type “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. The programme runs with no alerts and then closes.
