You will find the onboard VGA and audio drivers here at Asus
http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

Your audio plugs and monoitor must be on the I/O plate for these drivers to work, if you use an expansion slot then you have a Sound Card installed, see here, click the image to focus

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Try installing this way, you have to force the driver to install, use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

This one is abit of a stinker, are you able to access this program http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWAR...LXPH1su2.shtml

the driver listed is for Vista and it's a Conexant, the only way isthis posted by someone with the same problem
Talk - Audio Drivers
I would like to thank Gateway for making it so hard just to have some audio on my laptop. About several weeks ago i purchased a Gateway Notebook MX 6455 for school purposes, well that same day i messed up the partitions while trying to install Ubuntu and erased Windows….yeah tell me about it.
So I reinstalled Windows with the recovery disk that came with it, and everything went fine until I figured out I was not hearing that “beautiful” Windows XP welcome sound (i knew something was missing from the windows experience). Then, I went to Gateway site and went to download the drivers and was downloading them and they kept saying FAILURE. I then figured out, after thoughtless hours, that I had to install the realtek audio drivers first. So I did that, then went back to install Gateway’s drivers and to my surprise….audio still did not work. So I ordered the Recovery Disk (an updated one) and the nice support person gave it to me for free, which arrived later on. And still they did not work, so I was about to sell this computer away until I did another google search for good luck.
I searched for who knows what and i came across this website, notebookreview.com . Where i was leaded to this topic , which the author sounded exactly like me.
For people having the same audio problem (Conexant Ac-Link Audio Drivers, Realtek) here is the fix.
“1. Install Realtek Audio driver (WDM_A380 or WDM_A381, doesn’t matter).
2. Reboot
3. Download and try to install the Conexant AC 97 audio driver. You can get the one from Gateway (D00245-001-001 driver), or any other manufacturer that uses this chip in the notebook. Pay attention to where it stores the files. For instance the Gateway driver uncompresses to c:\cabs\directory name.
4. Go to device manager, find the Realtek AC 97 audio item under “Sound, video, and game controllers”. Right click on it and select UPDATE DRIVER
5. Select NO if it asks to connect to Windows Update, click NEXT
6. Select “Install from a list of specific location” and click NEXT
7. Select “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click NEXT
8. DE-select “Show compatible Hardware”. CONEXANT should show up under manufacturer since you tried to install the driver earlier.
9. Click on CONEXANT on the left, then select “Conexant AC-Link Audio” on the right and click NEXTThe driver will install. It may ask you for the location of some files, point it to the directory the Conexant driver uncompressed to in step 3.
Reboot, and you should have working audio!”

Hi thank you for your quick replys. i have tried these suggestions and it says it can't find the driver. i downloaded winzip version 10.0 and extracted the files. i can see setup files but when i open them it still says driver not found half way through installing. Do i need to uninstall my multimedia audio controller? is their any other drivers from another website i could download and try to install? please help. Ive looked at many of your replys to other people and you seem like you help a lot of people. thanks. seabass

Did you try this method, use the yellow flagged device to update

Check these out

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

My speakers are connected to the computer and turned on and i still have a big yellow symbol by the multimedia audio controller. Could you please help. many thanks seabass

First Your audio plugs must be on the I/O plate for this driver to work, if you use an expansion slot then you have a

Card installed, see here, click the image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

if they are then you need to check that audio is [Enabled] in the BIOS

As soon as the comp boots press the <Delete> key the Main menu opens
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...n%20Screen.JPG

using arrow keys - select the Advanced Tab
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...d%20Screen.JPG

use arrow keys - select Onboard Devices Configuration - Press Enter
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...figuration.JPG

check that Onboard AC'97 Audio is set to [Enabled] if [Disabled] use the + or - key to change

Press F10 to Save Changes & exit BIOS

The comp will complete to boot into windows

Install audio again

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Ok first off that's not the motherboard, it's the chipset, I'd email again, 3 questions
1. What is the Chipset
2. What audio driver
3. Who makes the notebook
ask for links to their sites, that should throw them.

try installing the driver this way, doesn't matter that it's not yellow flagged, just make a note of where the unzipped files you downloaded
are
