That board has Realtek HD audio go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20Codecs
Download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click downloaded file on desktop to install
The site is slow
Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Do what bookworm suggested.
If that fails, check in BIOS to make sure it's not "Disabled"
If it is, then obviously enable it.
If this makes no difference, format your PC again and reinstall Windows.

Usually on Compaqs, you press F1 during boot up and you'll then enter a blue kind of screen.
Go in to "Advanced" if available and find the audio.

i've been reading your replies and you guys have helped many users already.
i also have the same problem as with fatima, i reformatted my pc and everything went well except there's no sound. i've tried everything already and i even checked the Sounds and Audio Devices on control panel but it says "No Audio Device". can you guys help me with this one? I'm new to this stuff.

You have a realtek sound card.
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_ no=1&prod_no=210
Go to the following and you'll find all the drivers you need

Check these out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.
you will find out how to set audio in BIOS here

Try this:
Go to control panel and then click on system. From there go to hardware and device mager.Look for your soundcard and update the driver.Highlight the bubble that says "install from a list or specific location" then click on "Don't search I will choose the driver to install".On the next page should be some drivers for your sound card.If theres more than one then try all of them.
This fixed my problem so I hope it fixes yours.
