Can someone explain to me in simple terms what one is and needed for?

I am still missing my sm bus controller from device manager and i want to reinstall the driver. I system restored my computer a few weeks ago and had to find and reinstall a lot of drivers. (There arnt any on the cd that came with my pc). So if someone could tell me what there used for and where to look i would be very happy
