XP Problems

I seem to be having a problem with my wifes laptop. For some reason when windows boots up it automatically goes into the screen saying that windows did not boot up correctly with the options of going into safe mode and going with last known good configuration.

I have tried going into safe mode but then it gives a BSOD and then reboots. It also does the same thing when I choose the Last Known good configuration option as well.

Any thoughts on what is causing this issue? The only option that i have not tried is a Clean install of the OS, and that is only as a last resort

Thanks in advance

Have you tried the safe mode option "Safe mode with networking"? Very often that works when other safe mode option doesn't.

If that works try and remember anything you may have installed around the time the problem appeared, then uninstall it whilst in safe mode with networking. You may have installed an incompatible or corrupted driver recently or an application which Windows doesn't get along with.

Just one bit of advice before you try "safe mode with networking" and that's to temporarily disconnect the laptop's connection to the internet (remove the wireless card or ethernet lead). That's because that mode allows you to still connect to the internet but doesn't load any firewall software (not even the XP standard firewall), which would leave you open to malware attacks.

Thanks for the input, unfortunately I got the same response as i did when trying Safe Mode or Last Known. I have tried doing all the options there are on that screen and unfortunately it looks like I will have to do a clean install in order to get this thing working. Luckily We have everything backed up But I do thank you for the help

Well I would just like to applaud you for taking the sensible precaution of making backups, maxwell. I wish I had a quid for every post I've read along the lines of "Help, my PC won't start and all my photos are on there!!"

Reminds me of an old favourite song by the late Marlene Dietrich, "When will they ever learn?"

Take care my friend.
