Question no sound device(PLEEEEEEEEZ HELP)

Hi everyone I am at my wits end. I hope somebody can help me.My computer details are the end.
When I try to play a file from my music library I get a message that says Windows media cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device on your computer or,it might be in use by another programme,or it might not be functioning properly.
This all started when I had to perform a non destructive reinstallation of windows after picking up a virus Win32.Tiny.abk The stange thing is I get music to play when I play pinball but no sounds of the ball hitting things.
I have tried all the trouble shooting advice in windows including updating drivers rolling them back reinstalling them after uninstalling them. I,ve been in PC BIOS its at automatic enabled and started .
In sounds and audio devices uder volume it says no audio device yet in all the troubleshooting tips it tells me the devices are working properly and under audio tab sound playback it says default device no playback device also I,m not able to acess the dropdown menu.
I also tried

1. Open Device Manager (open Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager)

2. Click VIEW, SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES

3. Find the 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device on the SYSTEM DEVICES list.

4. Right click the ISAPNP Read Data Port device and select "Update Driver"

5. Select "NO , NOT THIS TIME, then select “Install from a list or specific location"

6. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install."

7. Unselect "SHOW COMPATIBLE HARDWARE"

8. Select STANDARD SYSTEM DEVICES under Manufacturer

9. Under MODEL, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”

10. Select this item and select "Next".

11. You will receive some frightening error message that you should disregard

12. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and active. If not, restart the PC.
This didn,t work in fact it destablised my computer and I think I managed to undue it. I was given most of this advice by a computer whiz kid friend as I,m not so technical but I,m a quick learner. I know I reformat windows having done it before but I hate giving in to a problem.
COME ON CYBERSPACE DO YOUR STUFF.
Thanks Bill.

Hi pip22. Thanks for your reply. I tried this with no luck still won,t play my windows media files. However it said that I should be logged on as an administrator my computer does not give the option to log on as an administrator unless I log on under safe mode . Should I do that? When I downloaded realtek it seemed to download fine and restarted the computer itself without my asking. Do you think it has been downloaded correctly or should I download it again under safe mode?
Thanks Bill

Check these out

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

get the driver from realtek http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

Download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click downloaded file on desktop to install

The site is slow

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Hi there. Thanks for your assistance however when I try audio tab it tells me I have no playback devices and the text is light grey and the dropdown menus cannot be adjusted. I also tried your second point and all the settings are correct. I downloaded fom the site you linked but I still have the same message as before and I cannot play a music file also I have no sounds when I play a game . What is strange though is that I can hear the music when I play pinball but I don,t hear any sounds when the ball hits an object etc. Another thing that might help your assessment of my situation is that when my sounds were working fine I had a speaker showing in my taskbar then for whatever reason it disappeared and my sounds stopped working. Since I downloaded the link you gave me I now have a multi channel audio configuration icon in the taskbar, but still no sound. Hope this helps you to come up with another solution as I would be so gratefull.
Thanks Bill

Hi Barbara. Thanks for your help however I downloaded no 6 but I am still getting no sounds and the original message Windows media cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device on your computer or,it might be in use by another programme,or it might not be functioning properly.
I hope your fine computer brain can come with another idea as I am beginning to think that I,m going to have to complete a full destructive re installation of windows and I,m sure you are aware how laborious a task that is. Also that might not work as the problem only arose after I carried out a non destructive recovery.
Thanks for trying to help it is greatly appreciated. Bill

Try this to see if Device Manager can find the driver

Update Installation

Logon as Administrator
Right click My Computer – choose Properties
Choose hardware Tab – click Device Manager
Expand Sound ,video and game controllers
Right click audio driver – Realtek, Creative etc
Choose Update driver
The Hardware Update Wizard appears
Windows Update – click No, not this time
Click Next
Choose Install from a list or specific location ( Advanced ) radio button
Click Next
The “Please wait while the wizard searches” window appears
If it find and installs the driver click Finish
Click Close

Hi there. I was away just got your idea about the bios and no luck. Something I thought I would mention that might have something to do with the problem us that when I carry out a virus check with AVG it tells me that there has been a change to shell32.dll and its path is C:\wundows\system32\shell32.dll. It shows throughout the search then is not there under any threats at the end. Also recently I have picked up a few viruses that are not repaired or healed so I haved moved them to the virus vault. A few of them relate to system volume information Do you think I should empty the virus vault. Also it was after picking up the virus Win32.Tiny .abk that I had to carry out non destructive re installation of windows and that was when my sound problem began for the first time.
Thanks for your help and intrest Barbara hope you or another kind soul can come up with a solution. Bill

i have this exact problem on my HP media center m7170 desktop. i have run through all the steps minus the BIOS( it is next then i give up for tonight) i had a trojan problem then the pc failed to boot at all after the "fix" so i completely reformated with windows xp (not the exact version that came with my pc) since doing so i have have many driver issues all of which have been resolved except my ethernet(im using wireless now anyway) and i have NO SOUND. my sound card is definately integrated and when i go through all of the steps mentioned above i have all the same problems as wtelfer: control panel says my sound device is working properly, but when i access the controls they are greyed over and not useable. i get nothing but the generic system beep for errors. HP wont help me i have tried there service dept twice and told them off just yesterday. i would just go buy a dedicated sound card but HP didnt give my pc enough pci slots. i dont think a particular virus could have caused this because i am working on a fresh install of windows with the same problem. the only pattern i see is the hp/compaq brand integrated card + xp reinstall = Fail

Try a System File Check go to Run – type “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. The programme runs with no alerts and then closes.

This has appeared on the SpyBot Search& Destroy list, get the programe, update immediatley and then run and clean all it finds
