xp instability (i suppose)

i've a strange problem..
Say, i install an application and works fine for some days. then say, that app hangs or crashes. now, i stop that application. now if i try to run the same app at a later point in time, it will be in the same instable status n i can't use. The problem persists even if i uninstall that prog and install again.
For ex:
* i used StEx program and something happened n explorer crashed. Now i uninstalled and installed again, but everytime explorer crashes.
* i used Pocket Oxford Dictionary, and while maximizing it, application crashed (god knows why ) and it never worked again in my comp.
* Googletalk, also crashed and after so many uninstallation and installations it is not working..

Are there any registry keys involved in making these application unstable? is my xp safe? please help.. Hope u got my problem

A few non-specific recommendations:

1) Open up the case and blow out any dust. Detach and re-seat all connections. Remove and re-seat RAM modules.

2) Run antivirus and spyware programs.

3) Run system file checker. Start-> Run -> sfc /scannow

4) Uninstall any unused programs.

5) Defrag.

6) Uninstall any programs that are still problematic. Try installing them, one at a time, in safe mode and test. (Tap the f8 key repeatedly when booting up and select safe mode with networking.)

I just built an HTPC and had a hell of a time with unstable drivers for an HDTV capture card. Installing in safe mode finally worked.
